Default low gas mileage?

i have just been living with it but i was curious if there might be something wrong.
i did a mpg test with just normal driving (i'm 16 so you know that means driving kind of crazy) and i got 11.5 mpg... that was a little lower than i wanted but i blamed it on big tires and engine mods.

i did another mpg test of trying to stay under 2000 RPMs as much as possible and i'm pretty good at it. i drove super slow everywhere and got about 12.5 mpg... i was hoping for a little higher but i just said oh well.

both tests were just normal city driving.

should i be getting better gas mileage or is this about average? i have smelt gas through my AC twice but it hasn't happened since last summer but i haven't been using the AC so maybe thats why i haven't been smelling it. i only smelt it for like 5 seconds. could there be a leak?

thanks for all the help guys.

John

staying under 2000 is what's killing it for ya. These OHC's love 2500-3000 constant for efficiency.

BUT.....city driving...you really have no choice but to have crappy mileage. Fluctuating rpms and speeds, stopping and going, etc. It's what happens when you're not driving at speed on the freeway. Hell....I'm rollin' like 15 in the city and 19-20 on the freeway.

It's hard to say if you've never calculated your MPG before as you don't have a point of reference to compare to. 11 MPG does sound pretty low... how exactly are you calculating your MPG?

haha this is good to know. i was thinking something like this might be the case because when i drove normal (2000-3000 rpms on average) i was getting better gas mileage sometimes. i figured it was just in my head but guess not!

it was a very crude and not accurate mpg test. i just did the math by how many miles i went on 1 tank and how many gallons i put in my truck at the gas station. i normally go ~200 miles on 1 tank and i almost always put ~17.5 gallons of gas in my tank at the gas station. 200/17.5 = 11.4 so thats how i got it. i know its not exact but it should be close.

my mom did a mpg test back in novemberish and she said 11.9
since then i have just been remembering numbers and doing simple division

sounds like i'm just gonna have to live with bad gas mileage because of my city driving. it is pretty bad city driving (lots of red lights/starts and stops/and lots of sitting in parking lots and crap with my friends)

thanks for all the help guys

City driving is a killer on gas mileage. Nothing gets good gas mileage in the city except for hybrids, if you don't mind getting caught in one. It's kinda like the fat chick and moped thing, you can ride one every once in a while, just don't get caught! You'll never hear the end of it if you do...

are you compensating for the speedo difference due to the larger tires?

x2....said it earlier but I don't think he read that.

Back when I was still 4.10 and 35's, my speedo was 10% off. My trip said 200 when in reality I actually went 220....

They Shane, do you think my tires could be throwing it off a little too, I had REALLY small tires when I got my truck, and I put the bigger ones on it, not that big, but deff bigger.

My speedo is off a tad. GPS says like 68, spedo says 65

ah i never thought about the odometer being off. i thought yall were saying my speedo was off not my odometer. i was confused haha. i knew the speedometer would be off but i never thought about the odometer being off. it makes since now though, and no i did not compensate for that. how much do you think it would be off?

35s + 4.10s = 20 miles off so 33s + 4.10s = 15 miles? i dont kno what do yall think?

yeah.....they work together....think about it....if one's off, the other has to be off too right??....

Figure out the percentage difference between your stock tires and your current tires......we're comparing overall diameter here. Then, multiply that percentage by your trip and now you know your actual trip reading.
