Default 95 ranger splash 4.0 overheating problem

About a week ago my alternator took a crap on my 95 ranger 4.0 5 speed well I replaced that and two days later I went in the morning to let the truck warm up before work and 10 minutes later when I went out to leave the temperture gauge was buried in hot.... So that night I put a thermostat in it and I drove 25 miles to work the next morning without a problem but then on my way home from work the temp. buried again.... So I figured I bought a junk thermostat so I went and put another one in it and the same thing happened went to work fine, overheated on the way home..... So then I thought maybe the gauge was messed up so I replaced the temp. sensor and again the same thing went to work fine overheated on the way home. So now I am stumped. My next question may be stupid, the thermostat goes in with the spring side toward the engine, right? Im not stupid but being stumped I am taking anything into consideration. I couldnt see the water pump being bad and only pumping some of the time, could it? Thanks in advanced any information is greatly appreciated!!

Its possible for the water pump to have rusted fins and not allowing the coolant to flow correctly. Before you condemn the water pump try to pull the thermostat and fill the engine with coolant to where it sits in the block. Could have an air bubble trapped just under the thermostat and not allowing the coolant to touch it and open it up. Also try a fan clutch before you throw away the water pump idea. Sometimes those thermal fan clutches wear out and not allow enough air to flow through the radiator.

x2 I had the clutch fan fail on my other truck, and it did work sometimes. Make sure you buy a new clutch fan if that is the problem, I went the junkyard route, got a fan off a truck with less miles, and it broke and went through my radiator, let me tell you that was a TON of fun, about as much fun as getting **** blocked by a rich fat kid with a Hummer and a little weiner.

The other thing you might want to do is check the fins on your radiator and make sure there aren't a ton of them bent over, that can cause overheating in certain driving conditions. And this one is rare, but you might have something like a piece of cardboard or something like that stuck in your grill and sometimes it kicks up and blocks your radiator. Just a possibility. Good luck let us know how it goes
