Default Ranger Engine Upgrades

So I was wondering about some general performance upgrades I could look into for my '99 Ranger. Anything that could help me out at the strip or the light...engine, exhaust, whatever. anything that could give me more power and maybe a tranny swap. I have a 4.0 V6 (not sure about the tranny but would like a 5 speed) thanks

The very first and easiest things to do is a new intake by K&N or MAC Performance or something and an exhaust...I like Flowmaster but any Ranger guy will tell you that Gibson is great. Also an undrive pulley will add about 8 hp and after you do a few thing get a SCT tuner. It may cost $400 to get it with tunes on it but it will suprise you!

Why stop at a transmission swap... do a V8 swap at the same time, or add a super charger.

There are quite a few different things that you could do what have you done so far? What is your budget?

If your mainly concerned with the strip & off the light I would look at changing your gears. It doesn't really give you any more power, but it will significantly increase your off the line speeds.

I put a K&N air filter and had a Flowmaster 50 series exaust (single) on my truck and it made a big difference. My truck is only a 2.3 but you can imagine what it would do to a 4.0. I dont think a 50 series would be good for a 4.0. Probably a 40 or a 44 would sound better.

Exhaust wont do anything.

If you really want to break the bank go with a supercharger.

If not do a k&n intake. And a tuner. Go with the X-Cal 2 or 3.

so that bottleneck after the cat where it goes from 2.5" to 1.75" doesn't affect performance?
