Anyone have any ideas
I have a 2011 4.0 4x4. Its been snowing here off and on and when its snowing my truck seems to be tring to kick out of gear or something. Does this weather its in 4x4 or not. Kind of freaks me out when it happens. But only does this when snowing not with snow on the ground.

Re: Anyone have any ideas
OK, took my truck to have the oil changed today and they did a complete check of all fluids, air filter, tires, battery and all that stuff. was going to buy a new air filter after oil change. Guy comes to me and says there is no air filter in the truck.. I said no way can`t be true. Any way he ask if I wanted to buy one. I said h__l no i`m going straight to the dealer I bought the truck from, which was only 2 miles down the road. Guy in the shop says if the air filter was not there the engine light would have been on. Thinks the guy at the oil change place took it out to get me to buy one from them. But ford guy put a new one in for free. So will see if the air filter fix the problem. Thanks to those that helped me on this.

Re: Anyone have any ideas
So, also living in Ohio and knowing the weather we've had this week, does your truck still act like it's kicking in and out of gear? And how would the air filter cause this? I would think snow/moisture coming in the intake, if it even could do so, would cause the engine to stutter, not a popping out of gear feeling. I'd think it was more likely simply the tires slipping and catching on the road, if that was possible.
I know I'm kind of amazed at how light the Ranger feels in the rear, even with 210 lb of sand tubes. I do think it is partly because of the wide standard tread tires being more likely to stay on top of the snow, packing it down rather than cutting into it and getting a bit more traction.

my old ranger did the same thing the OPs was doing as has many other 4.0 owners on here...a new AF does the trick

Re: Anyone have any ideas
I was having the same exact issue this week while driving on the highway while it was snowing. Thought my trans was slipping or a problem with the rear diff. Looked around on the forums and found the air filter consensus. I changed mine about 1 year and 5k ago with a Mann paper filter but I went ahead and bought a new Motorcraft one anyway. Opened up the housing today and saw this:

Re: Anyone have any ideas
You should make it a habit to check those during an oil change

Re: Anyone have any ideas
Truck is running fine, so air filter was the issue. Found out that a buddy of mine pulled the filter out to chane it and forgot to put the new one in. Said he got to doing something for his GF. Will remember to check behind him next time if there is one.
