Default 94 4.0 timing off?

so when i start the truck lately it revs at 2000rpm then drops to 500 and i have to feather the throttle to keep it running until it warms up (wisconsin is cold lol). Also when im driving it backfires when i give it gas and it shifts late. And the engine light is NOT on. im thinking that the timing could be off? Any other ideas or has someone else had this problem?

make sure your getting the right fuel pressure
make sure your getting spark and compression
And enough air in the engine and go from there

Just off the top of my head, it sounds like a vacuum issue.

Welcome...

The shifting could be a speed sensor issues.

Also start with the basics:
Spark plugs/plug wires
Clean the MAF and IAC and maybe the Throttlebody.
Check your air filter, replace the fuel filter.
Try doing a Seafoam treatment.
Check for vac leaks.

Its hard to help when we dont know what you have done/checked already.
Most of us on here are pretty helpful, but you need to realize alot of the same questions get asked a million times and most people dont know how to search the forum.

The more detailed info you can provide, the better we can help you.
