General Questions about my Ranger
I just bought a 1997 ford ranger 4x4, Ext cab, 4.0
It has 105,000miles on it, and i havent had any free time to clean it up play with it or really drive it. Bought it last night 11/6/13. It has a rough country leveling kit on it. Anyways came home and it has an oil leak im thinking its the front crankshaft seal. Gotta get under it and clean it up its nasty under it. Also not sure on how to use the 4x4. I know its got warn lockers whatever those are. Also wanting to go up in tire size maybe a 33 if thats possible? Does this model have torsion bars? Sorry for all the questions not my first ranger had two of them as a teenager and finally got the money to grab another one. Thanks for the help. Sorry so long

The Warn lockers are the hubs. You turn them to lock, put the truck in N and shift it to 4WD

this for your 4x4 question
no you do not have torsion bars that began in 98
and as for 33's I think you would need a little more than a leveling kit to squeeze them in but i could be wrong

Is there something special about warn locker?

Unless the truck had a manual Xfer case OEM, then it means someone had problems with the old centrifigual type of auto hubs and they replaced them.
As for the oil slick, the usual and proven method for locating the source is to clean the thing up real good (gunk + carwash) then drive, then look for the trace of oil. The trick is, if it leaks a lot you can't drive too long and if it's a small leak, you don't want to drive so long that oil slobbers all around and you can't pinpoint the source. So with that said, you may or may not have to stop by that car wash a time or three. If it's the front main, plan on seal and maybe a sleeve on the balancer. I can think of worse places to have a leak.
For 4X operation, and I must assume you have the electril Xfer canse and not a manual, engage hubs while stopped and you can go into 4H at speeds up to 50MPH. Or prolong driveline life by slowing down to less. 4L is engaged only when vehicle is stopped and after passing through 4H. Gotta be stopped and if it's an auto tranny it's gotta be in neutral or maybe park. You didn't tell us what tranny and xfer case type you have. Anywah, hope this helps.

Re: General Questions about my Ranger
If you didnt know what warn lockers were, what we're telling you might sound like chinese. Those "lockers" are called manual locking hubs. I wouldn't say that they are special to have but some people prefer them over the automatic locking hubs. All it means is that if you want to put your truck in 4x4, you have to physically get out of your truck go to the front tires and "manually" turn the hub from the FREE position to the LOCK position on both front wheels. Then get back in your truck and turn your 4wd button over to 4H, then 4L if you need it. You can leave the hubs locked when not in 4wd, but I wouldn't do it for long periods of time. I prefer the manual locking so I know that they are locked when I put them in instead of hoping that they do it themselves. I changed mine out from auto to warn manual locking hubs.

Sorry i left out some info.
Truck is a 5speed manual.
as far as the transfer case goes im not sure.
So first get out change the lockers to locked, then get in and change the switch to 4h or 4l then dont i have to drive in reverse to get it into 4h or 4l?
Again sorry for being a noob at this stuff bare with me

No, you should be in neutral before switching into 4 H or 4 L. After switching into 4x4, wait for the 4x4 light to come on the dash, then pull out and you should be in 4 wheel drive. When disengaging four wheel drive, put transmission in neutral switch it back to 2wd, then I like to put it in reverse and backup about 10 feet to ensure that is no longer engaged.

Sounds like the weak auto hubs were replaced with Warns and that you have the electric shift transfer case. As such, and just like the owners manual says, you can shift into 4H at speeds up to 50MPH. Of course, slower would be preferred but and since you've got manual hubs, meaning the front axles and the transfer case are already spinning when vehicle is moving, it probably doesn't matter that much. You don't have to worry much about being a nooblet and screwing it up by putting it in 4L, it only allows this when the vehicle is stopped and after it as been put in 4H.

Re: General Questions about my Ranger
Thanks for the help everyone, hopefully getting the oil leak fixed tomorrow, pretty sure its a vavle cover gasket or the timing gasket.
