To OP.... todays oils are leaps ans bounds above what thwy were 15 or 20 years ago. Find something with certs to meet the trucks requirements and follow change interval listed in your owners manual and rest easy that most likely it won't die due to oil failure. My old 94 specs six months or 5000 miles and went well over 229000 before I got tboned and totalled. Never burned unusual amounts and no major repairs using almost every shelf name brand available. As for filters though none were better than motorcraft for me I didnt like the startup chatter the others made.
Don't overthink it and follow your owners manual and it will rust away before the oil fails.

This is a good thing to note. I don't want someone thinking just because the back of a bottle says good for 5,000 miles, that there oil will still be performing well enough to actually leave it in there for that long.
You definitely need to check oil reports before trying to decide how long your particular vehicle will go with that particular oil and that the oil is still performing well enough to do so. Many people's driving styles and local trips will dramatically change things.
But unfortunately most people don't and never will go that in depth.

Just changed my oil bout 70 miles ago, and made the switch to castrol 10w30, seems like a hell a lot better oil then the penzoil I've always ran, but on my ranger that is the one thing I keep up on is oil changes! At 3500 miles I'm changing it, and I've always ran puralator, that's my favorite besides wix, but I've heard wix is expensive and I'm a cheap butt so puralator is my favorite, never run a fram!!

I use motorcraft filter and GTX, but before I put the filter on I fill it with marvel mistery oil. Don't know what it does but it quiets her up.

Re: Which Oil do you prefer and filter?
I purchased my 2001 Ranger 4.0 litre brand new back in Sept of 2000 with 17 miles on it. I changed the oil after the dealer did their 500 mile mandatory oil change. I've been using Mobil 1 full synthetic with Purolator or Mobil 1 filters ever since. Usually change it every 7000 miles give or take. It now has just over 170,000 on it and it runs like new.

In two years of ownership, I've racked up about 10,000 miles. I've used Lucas 5w-30 with K&N pro series oil filter. I just recently bought Castrol Edge oil but that's till another 2,500ish miles, 5qts for $5.

Re: Which Oil do you prefer and filter?
I have always used Mobile1 with all my vehicles. Now I just buy any synthetic that is on sale. Advance Auto has a Quaker State special- 5 quarts with filter for $19.99!

Re: Which Oil do you prefer and filter?
I use Royal Purple oil for $9.00 per qt and Royal Purple oil filter for about $14.00 on my 1996 Ranger 2.3 L 106 K miles. I get approx 1.5 miles per gallon more using the Royal Purple. I also use the Royal Purple rear gear oil.

In my oil brand research I read in a number of places that Quaker State leaves a soapy residue/film in your engine.
