there are no other harnesses that directly hook to the computer, but there are harnesses that connect to the main harness that may or may not contain wires that connect to the computer.

Does it have to be a 4x4 harness that I use?

Can I still use my 87 CPU.

I also have a concern about the motor being a 94 as for the guy who I bought it from wasn't sure if it was a 92 or 94. Does that even matter?

Idk why but I can't seem to find the vin on this darn thing.... Would be more than happy to send pics if that helps.

Sorry if I make this hard but I'm trying to get everything lined up so have every possible thing in the shop for when I get started

If I was doing the swap I would get the two trucks next to each other and swap the whole motor transmission wiring and computer as long as you have the whole truck that is

2001, 4.0l sohc v6, 4x4 auto, 77,000, motor swap (last owner never changed oil), brush guard off road lights, intake, flowmaster exhaust, painted intake/valve covers, fisher plow.

I'm really wantin to just get a harness an CPU from a different ranger. I could get one from a explorer tho just heard the ranger one a lot easier not sure how much though

Go to a scrap yard you can get everything you need just find a truck the has the same motto take the computer and all the harness stuff find a 5 speed that has that exact motor you have 5 speed wiring harnesses aren't usually more than jus a reverse light switch and maybe a speedo sensor or maybe one other sensor

My biggest concern is replacing my dash. I know I will be looking for a ranger 90-94. When I change out CPU an harness I won't have to swap the dash to will I? I've read a lot of threads and I think I'm now just really confused with all the info

that's a general year range to avoid OBD-II. the reason for donor is so you you have all emissions components for the management to work properly. dash is up in the air depending on how you execute. change the dash, you change the dash plugs that hook into the mainharness, making less wiring headache. it just depends on what you want to deal with. my '88 didn't have a tach, using the right switches/sending units, I could've used my stock dash with v8 swap, but i wanted accurate gauges with out redundancy and built a cluster with autometer gauges.

Would a harness and ecu from a 2.9 91-92 even work? Or does it have to be from a 4.0. In my mind I feel like I've been told it'll work either one but at the same time I'm telling myself that the injectors wouldn't be getting the signal to make up for that 1.1liters of displacement. Help please. (Bone yards are few in my area and limited at that)

mix matching you need to pay attention. you're right, for one thing 2.9l is less displacement and ran different injectors. but also 4.0 is MAF and has EDIS which isn't the same profile as TFI-IV to the computer. big mess. generally you keep the computer that matches the drive train.

Hmm.... Honestly to me it almost would sound easier swapping my body onto a second gen frame from the scrap yard, I've been wanting to upgrade the front and rear axels anyways and as far as I know the rangers with the 4.0 came with the Dana 35 and 8.8 rear. But I'm starting to narrow down my search possibly. Did the extended cabs and I guess normal cabs use the same frame rail? As mine
