It isn't about the ring, but if you are serious about buying that one. Go talk to the jeweler. They usually are good people and will work with you. You pay 1/2 now and 1/2 when you pick it up. Make sure you have her ring size and have them size it for you in the mean time.
When I bought the "ring" for my wife. I was flat broke, just moved to Minnesota, fresh from college, had no job. I used the little bit of credit card balance I had left and bought a $300 dollar ring. That was all I could afford and my wife loved it. Only upgraded when we had our twins 2 years later.
Just a thought for you. It isn't the size of the diamond, it is the size of the love you have for each other.
