PCV valve IIRC. Positive Crankcase Ventilation. The reason your engine idles smoother when you plug up the hose is because you are losing vacuum at the crack. This is a common problem on Rangers, so it shouldn't be hard to find that hose. It'll probably be under PCV hose.
