I would first remove the plastic trim on the top of the steering column and check the 4 bolts that hold the shift shaft to the top of the column casting. Over time, it is fairly common for those bolts to work loose, changing the gear indication. Eventually a bolt can even fall out and make it difficult or impossible to get all gear positions.

If that's OK, you can move to the actual cable adjuster under the column as shown below:

If you knew in advance exactly where it is, it would not be that hard to reach under the dash and find it by feel without removing the bolster. It could even be adjusted that way. However, it might be hard to do that the first time around.
