Idle sputters in gear... Occassionally gives P0302 Code
I've had a developing issue with my 2004 Ranger 3.0, I started getting a P0171 & P0174 (Running Lean in both banks). Then recently it started sputtering at idle while in gear, check engine light flashes, I take off and it lags along and then motor picks up and runs like normal, with the check engine light some times staying on.
I have checked the plugs and wires, but I'm a little confused since the truck runs great other than idling in gear.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated...

I have only been able to get it to do it in gear, it will run fine in park and neutral. When it's in gear and the rpm kicks down (just under 750rpm), then it starts to sputter and gradually gets worse, but it has never stalled.

Be sure all the intake is clean and clear such as air filter, MAF, etc. Ever change plugs ? Ever do SeaFoam ?

Re: Idle sputters in gear... Occassionally gives P0302 Code
I just installed a K&N cold air intake, MAF is clean, plugs and wires were done in March 2012 (13,000 miles), but I have never done a SeaFoam. I was reading some of the other posts and their issues were similar, some of them mentioned a fuel system cleaning from Pepboys. Would that be the same thing?

An injector cleaning won't hurt. Could actually be the oil from the K&N coating the MAF or other intake sensor.

A flashing CEL indicates a serious condition that can fry the cats.

Re: Idle sputters in gear... Occassionally gives P0302 Code
That CEL flashing is probably meaning a multiple random misfire, which is really bad to drive on. It's probably coming from the lean on both banks condition, which is 99% chance that it's a vacuum leak upstream that feeds both banks. Check your PCV vacuum hose elbow, they crack there a lot. Also check using carb cleaner around the intake manifold gasket mating surfaces, sometimes they leak there, and check your intake tube. Sometimes they crack. It sounds to be a substantial leak if you're having that many symptoms, so it should be easy to isolate.
P.S. Ditch the K&N. It's going to eventually dirty up your MAF and cause more issues. Not to mention it doesn't filter half as well as a paper filter, and on a 3.slow, it makes no difference in power. Just a thought.

When you pulled the #2 plug what did it look like? Picture? Did you have the issue before the k abd n install?

Re: Idle sputters in gear... Occassionally gives P0302 Code
Well, it's been a while, but I didn't want to prematurely give the result of my issue. After a closer inspection, the PCV valve was not getting a good seal. The o-ring was out of alignment and had a partial tear. I put a new o-ring on and checked the valve for any cracks. Put it all back together and also put a new set of spark plugs in, has been running great ever since. I haven't had another issue and it's been about 2 months now.
