Default Fuel Filter Question - flex fuel filter on regular fuel engine?

When I first got this truck, I replaced the fuel filter with one from O'Reilly's - pic below. It is exactly like the one I took off of the truck.

I've been having issues with my idle for quite a while now, I have changed plugs/wires and cleaned the IAC and MAF. Replaced coil, it had a hairline crack in it....been looking for vac leak - so far nothing.

Anyway, I want to replace that fuel filter again because of the rough idle - at first I went to Napa and they tried to sell me this one, which is different than what is on truck, it is shorter and bigger diameter, by almost an inch.

The guy brought out one like I have, he said it is for Flex fuel engine. He also said I would have problems using the wrong filter, however at that time, the truck was running really good.

I've since looked at Rockauto and other stores and it appears the filter I have is a flex fuel filter, I am positive my truck is not a flex fuel. I have the original dealer window sticker and the VIN # has a U (reg. not flex fuel).

The filter that I guess is supposed to go on there is a little shorter than the one I have on there now, not sure it will fit....
I don't recall having any problems when I changed the filter but it has been a few years. I do know that all three clips were broken and the filter is held on with zip ties - which work nicely - so far, I've never had any leaks from the filter connectors. Just had to buy some zip ties that were a little smaller width than usual but they work just as good as the clips.

Anyone have any comments on the filter (not the zip ties, I know it's not ideal but it works)?

Which filter do you have on your gasoline or flex fuel 3.0?

Thanks!

It shouldn't pose a problem, although being larger it may pose an issue with mounting. The line ends should be the same, but they could be a different diameter. If you don't have a flex fuel engine, then it should fit. The only difference I think was size, and they had a different clamp for mounting due to that. It looks like from the pic that your clamp has plenty of room around the FFV filter, so that may be the culprit. As far as size and filter material, it will pose no issue. As long as the hoses fit and it mounts fine, that filter will work.

That is the problem, I'm not sure which is the correct filter!

The only youtube videos I can find are within a year either way and they are using the 2.25" dia. filter, like the one that is on my truck now. alldatadiy.com says is uses YF1Z9155BA which is more than an inch bigger in diameter at 3.38" (according to fordparts.com), close enough in length to not be a problem 6.58" and 6.56" respectively.

There is no way the YF1Z9155BA will fit in the clamp that is on the truck though.

Napa sells Wix under their name, not a bad filter, better than Fram. 3 pop up on their website, once I plug in my truck data the one they recommend is smaller diameter than the Motorcraft at 3.11" but the length is only 6.3", not sure the lines will reach.

Rockauto pulls up several different filters of all sizes for my truck so that didn't help.

There must be a reason why Ford has different filters for each truck, but I can't find anything online. Just want to know which filter, it would be nice to know if that is the wrong filter on there now, how it was switched in the first place. I'll never know but it is obvious they are different sizes.

Just get whichever one fits in the clamp. More than likely that was the original type of filter installed on the truck.

That would be the littlest one. I over think everything, I was thinking of the volume of gas the bigger filters and that the smaller ones would clog faster - but if it doesn't matter……I could have changed the filter 10 times just in the time wasted trying to figure it out.
Thanks
