Default 2002 Ranger, 3,000RPM = Stutter?

Has anyone ever heard of this problem?

Im getting no codes and the truck runs fine otherwise.

It is a 2002 Ranger 2WD V6.

If im going onto the highway, or at quick acceleration, when I reach 3,000rpm ON THE DOT the engine shutters like crazy. Tach bounces all over and I lose all power whatsoever.

This is driving me nuts because I take the highway to work everyday, and im constantly in situations where I need to accelerate quickly to either merge or pass! Ive already almost been in two accidents on the freeway because I could not out-acclerate a semi while merging.

We have replaced the fuel filter and it is not a fuel realted issue unless the fuel pump craps out at 3k but I dont know.

Could this be some sort of sensor? But if it is, why is my computer not throwing me any codes?

THANKS FOR ANYONES INPUT AND/OR HELP ON THIS MATTER!

Steve0, my first post here.

It would help us help you if you tell us what motor you have and if its a auto or manual. It kind of sounds like the comp is shutting the motor. But that should only happen if you have an auto and its in neutral at 3k rpm.

It is a 3.0ltr v6, automatic transmission with approx 78,000 miles on it.

You can try pulling each Spark plug wire (At the coil pack) while truck is running and listen for change in engine sound. If it runs rough after pulling wire that cylinder is ok. If it makes no change and sparking it more than likely is an injector bad for that cylinder.

Could be the fuel pump not being able to deliver enough fuel when you hit that speed. Or it could be an electrical issue. Kinda hard to know without further diagnostics.

My truck does the same thing when in park it will rev all the way to 3,000 and then the needle will start bouncing and will not go any higher, But I dont think its done it while driving.

My truck is in the Sig. If it helps repairs on my truck have been a new fuel Pump/sending unit assembly, Spark plugs wires and distributer, camshaft position sensor, 3 new cats, IAC valve, and EGR pressure feedback sensor.

Those where repairs for other problems and where not done for that particular problem, but Ive noticed it still does it.

^^^Your problem is not a problem. To save the motor, when the truck is in park or neutral, the computer rev limits it to 3000rpm. This is normal. It's not normal when it does it while driving.

I had the same problem with my truck when i got an engine swap. It would stutter at 2500 rpms though. I went back and told them what was happening and they fixed it. They said it was some sensor that had to do with the timing...i dont know exactly which one, sorry I dont know much technical stuff. But at least this can point you in the right direction as far as looking for a sensor...hope this helps some what
