Default Help engine problems will not stop help

I have a 1998 ranger 3.0 4by4 extended cab, at 136,000 miles oil pump went bad so I pulled the pan and replaced the pump, ranger did good for a year about 8000 miles, than the pump went out again so I did not want to go through that again and bought a low milage engine used with 70K on it. Put the engine in ran great no engine light on went throught emissions without any problems, 10k miles later the engine burned a valve on number 5 cylinder. I pulled the heads and sent them out and had a valve job done, replaced the heads and engine did fine, about 1000 miles after the engine light came on, went to auto zone and they pluged into it to pull codes two codes PO401 which is a EGR and PO141 oxygen senor. Went to the house looked under hood pulled the EGR off and checked it with vacuum and it worked fine but was not getting any vacuum from line, traced the line to a the device which supplys the vacuum there is vacuum going into it but nothing coming out checked the device for power I am getting power but no ground. my question is when does the EGR suppose to supply vacuum? The next day went to work and saw the oil pressure gauge was not working at all. The engine was not making any noise so I figure maybe the sender went bad or maybe wire. Where is the sender Located, looked in my book and they don't tell. I am really pissed with this ford what a stream of bad luck, Why did the engine burn a valve? The machine shop just told me that is what Fords do but there must be a reason why. Will it do it again? PLEASE HELP. Thanks, porsch3xx

Hmm if its the egr..it may actually be the sensor...the dpfe sensor...its about $60 and two bolts and two hoses to remove to replace it. I recently had the P0401 code and i replaced mine and havent had any issues since.

The egr does something to send back unburnt gas to burn it...and if its not doing its job properly, it can cause stuff to overheat..maybe burning the valve.

DPFE sencer is that the silver square box with an electric plug and two rubber lines coming off of it? I took that off and tryed blowing throught it both way and it was blocked is this how it should be? Or should it be free to blow through? Thanks, Steve

^This. And I think it was a bit extreme to dump in a new engine because of the oil pump. That's like building a new house because the toilet stinks.

I bet the cam syncro went bad, not the oil pump. Change the dpfe sensor.

Check the HEGO fuse but most likely you need a new o2 sensor.

He meant the cam (camshaft) synchronizer..
Its in the top back of the engine and it drives the oilpump...its known for failing..and killing the engine.

3.0s and 4.0s have them...but they are really more known for failing in th 3.0.
Its a quick and easy $100 replacement fix if done before it fails.
I did a HowTo writeup and a video on replacing it..link is in my signature.

Ok I checked that before replacing the engine, I bought the replacement pump at NAPA and I was convinced the check valve in the pump failed, It is a pain in the ass to replace the pump in a 4x4, it most likly would have been alot easer pulling the engine but I did it the hard way on the ground and did not want to go back there again, that is why I did what I did, I figured a low milage engine was better than what I had, beside I parted out the old engine and got my money back for the new engine so I came out good, still have alot of spairs left over.

Nice trucks you have the white one looks like mine, looks like mine sits higher, the hood I took off mine to put the cowel hood on I still have if you need one. Thanks, Steve

OK I replaced the 3 O2 sensors and the dpfe, reset the check engine light. Drove the ranger for about 30 miles and the light came back on, over 200 bucks and I am back to square one. Any one have any advice for me at this point. Need to get tag it has been out for over a month now. thanks for any help, Steve

Get the codes scanned again now that you've replaced the O2 sensors and let us know what they are.

Do you know when the EGR vacuum can is suppose to get vacuum, I check it hot and cold and has no vacuum, I traced the green vacuum line to a servo device which has a plug and two vacuum lines one of the vacuum lines has vacuum the other is the line going to the EGR can. I also checked for power and ground, there is power going to this device but no ground. Where does this device get its ground from? Any help on this would be great. thanks, Steve

You putting on a "how not to" clinic. I have been thrown off this forum for humping code readers but in your case I am begging you to jb weld one to your arm. A p0141 means the heater in your b1s2 is not working. It is either the fuse, the connection or the sensor. If you have a v6 and just that code it is usually the sensor. You only needed to replaced that one sensor to get it working.

P0141 means the bank 1 sensor 2 heater is not working. Usually HEGO FUSE OR THE SENSOR IS BAD .. you need a code reader
