Default Is this how I use the fan clutch removal tool? (pic)

If I put it like this. I have to add a longer bolt through the pulley to hold the clutch tool in place. Is that correct? Without a longer bolt it does not hold anything in place.

I've used a lot of force to try and get it free and I'm worried I'm doing something wrong which could lead to breaking something I can't fix lol.

I thought I was supposed to remove the 4 bolts in the pulley, then move the pulley towards me (away from the engine). The pulley does not want to move like that.

I do not have a pipe to extend the wrench and I'm thinking that might be the problem? I do have a breaker bar but I don't think that's useful in this situation.

Here is what I did to my 4.0.. I ended up taking everything out cause I have up on accruing around with the nut. ( the rad., fan, fan shroud) and took it to a rad. Shop the guy there got it all apart for me but he told me that you leave everything together and use that tool. Then once that's loose then you can take all that crap apart. I don't know how well this works or how true it is that's just what I was told by someone who does this everyday.

Yea, I've read about leaving the belt on but my tensioner bolt snapped LOL. I've already got my radiator out and can't really drive it anywhere.

I think I'll just have to buy a pipe to use as a lever and hope for the best

Woohoo! I got it off no problem.

Went to the store and bought this. It took maybe 5lbs of pressure and that was it!

Next time, what you do is use the bolts that hold the pulley on to stick the tool in between. It uses those so you can hold it still while wrenching on the fan shaft. I always just shove a breaker bar in between the bolts and use an adjustable wrench on the shaft. A couple of whacks with a hammer, and she was loose.

Thanks, I wasn't sure how everything came apart and didn't want to break something. I'll try that next time since.

I didn't replace the fan clutch or water pump so I'll be back in there sometime.

Here are some pictures of the pita bolt. If you find this thread and have this issue I'll try to give some advice.

When I went to the hardware store to ask for a left handed drill bit, I was told they do not sell thing to help people break locks lol. I must look sketchy? My tensioner bolt snapped because of pressure on the bolt, not because it was seized. So I knew that a left handed drill bit would take it out easily. Instead I bought a screw extractor.

When I started drilling the bolt went inside so I couldn't see it. As you can see, I didn't drill in the center and I did not punch the bolt before drilling. I did use a tiny drill bit to start the hole.. I had to use a wireless drill because there was not enough room for the wired dill I have with the radiator out. (fwi if you have this issue).

It wasn't a hard job to do. I haven't done a lot of car things so if it happens I wouldn't worry about doing it yourself. I had never removed a radiator or fan clutch and never drilled a broken bolt out. I did replace my coolant with new coolant and I hope I did that right.

Oh and to remove the top radiator hose I think it's a lot easier to remove the entire airbox. You can grip the thing that holds the hose on a lot easier.
You can see how to remove the air box here http://www.fordrangerforum.com/engin...ir-intake.html

It's good you got that extractor to work; I've never had any luck with them on any occasion. I've always had to just drill it out then tap the hole again. I vowed never to use them again because they are very hard steel, and I snapped one off in the bolt I was trying to extract. Because it was so hard, at that point I couldn't drill the bolt out because of the tip of the extractor. So just be careful using it in the future, and don't snap it off in a bolt!

Yea, I had read about them breaking on people. It definitely was not my first choice but I was stuck. I figured since the bolt wasn't seized it would work fine in this situation. If it broke I would've cried.
