And the verdict is in....sort of
Removed the old starter and took it to Autozone. They tested it and it tested out fine.
I was about to walk back out of the store when I thought, a new one is only $40 after the $30 back for the core so I might as well install a new one.
Purchased the new one, took it back, installed it late yesterday afternoon and my son was driving her last night.
Not sure why it tested good, but I am very glad I chosse to get the new one.

I have determined that most mechanical / electrical challanges are directly connected to the nut that connects the steering wheel to the drivers seat.
