Re: Another weird Camshaft Synchronizer question!
I still put my truck at TDC before I even changed my cam sync. I didn't want to chance being off.

Re: Another weird Camshaft Synchronizer question!
i ordered the alignment tool from Oreilly, and it came in a box with like 5 of them, all different colors, and on the box it says which color to use for which engine and years.
For the 98-03 its the blue one, and for 93-97 its the yellow one.
Theres also other colored ones for 4.0s and taurus cars and even other engines.

Sounds kind of backwards to me, but I guess they're assuming if you need the tool you'll need to put it at TDC anyway since the only time you need it is if you suspect the timing is off, or you don't have a reference point from the previous synchronizer position.

The shop manuals assume nothing except that anything and everything could be fouled up before the tech gets at it. So, the manual doesn't suggest the easy way (marking the position) but does explain the complete procedure to be sure its done right. (and also to help justify the time charged on the job)

Re: Another weird Camshaft Synchronizer question!
I know this is an old thread, but I just came across this exact issue. I have a 2000 Ranger XLT, but not exactly sure what year the motor is. I am in the process of changing the camshaft synchronizer and the one that is in it had the long tab, the one I ordered has the short tab. Both sensors are 2-pin. GCExtreme mentioned setting TDC and using the short tab synchronizer anyhow. I was wondering if I can do this or if I have to have the long tab synchronizer?
