Default Ford Ranger Sport truck 3l compared to 4l?

I have heard that Ford will not be coming out with a 3l for 2009, just 4l.

My question is for the 2008 models, is there any different in gas mileage comparing a 3l to 4l? i've looked at sticker window and it shows both pretty much the same and on fuel economy website it shows you get better mileage overall with the 4l.

That's hard to believe.

Is the 4l a gas guzzler?

I have a 4.0 in my 97' supercab and a friend of mine has a 3.0 in a 00' regualar cab. I think the 4.0 possibly gets a little bit beter gas mileage because if you have a 5spd, you dont need to run the engine at high RPMs where as the 3.0 is much weaker in power then the 4.0 so it has to be runned at higher RPMs thus burning more gas. THe 4.0 is overall better. 3.0's suck!

the 4.0 is way better than the 3.0 more power and smoother running motor, and about the same fuel milage as the 3.0

The 4.0 has significantly more pickup than the 3.0 and according to the EPA gets the same exact gas mileage. See: Vehicle Table

The vulcan isn't as dependable either.

And if there is a significant difference in gas mileage, well, I'd rather pay the bit extra for a stronger engine. It all goes back to "you get what you pay for"... And the 4.0 is one tough engine.

the 3.0 is bullet proof, it depends what you want out of your truck. the 4.0 is also a good engine and will probably take more "abuse" but as for dependability the 3.0 is where its at as long as you take care of your truck. and for the ppl that say the 3.0 is a dog, with a few bolt ons and a tuner you can make the same hp and tq as a 4.0

ya, the 3.0L is hard to kill, we have company trucks with 3.0L that are going on around 170,000-200,000 miles with only regular oil changes and scheduled maintenance. with my few bolt ons i get about 16-18 mpg in city driving for an extended period of time, and around 25 mpg highway at 60-65 mph. its attainable with the 4.0 L also though, it all depends on your driving habits for mpg

x3 on the 3L is a pretty depenable motor. Yeah its a little under powered, but there are bolt ons that can help with that.

Wow, this thread is almost a year old!

I have no personal experience with the 3.0, but I have heard many times that is very reliable, even more so that the 4.0.
