Default 3.0 V6 replacement

2003 Ranger/3.0 Vulcan V6/Automatic/Rear-wheel drive/Belltech Shocks/Extended Cab/Step Sides/Wedgewood Blue

Thinking about replacing my Vulcan with a larger, more powerful V8 sometime in the future. Other sources I've referred to have suggested the 302, which suits me fine, but would like to know if any others work as well. Probably won't replace the engine for a while (55.6k) but am always planning ahead. Suggestions would be appreciated.

Pictures coming soon.

Pretty much what I figured. Like I said, I wouldn't mind have one in there either. Would probably remove one from a Boss or find the engine by itself and do it that way. As far as my 3.0 is concerned, I'll keep it until it blows apart. Fuel mileage is respectable for a truck and yet have still been able to traverse some of the more nasty forest service roads in my state. Can't exactly say that for the F-150s I've blown past on my way up but that's another issue. Thanks for clarifying.

Try to find a 4.6l out of a crownvic or marquis, make sure u get the harnesses. Also take the trans, the driveshaft will have to be shortened, and if u have the 7.5in rear end, upgrade it with a 8.8 unit out of the same car, if available, or one from a mustang.

To do this some modifications will be necessary to the fenderwells. Also an aftermarket rad and cooling fan will be a must.

If ur looking to go carb style, a 302 would be your best bet. Personally, i prefer fuel inection, for the ease of tuning and reliability.

The fewer operations required, the better. Can't really do anything as a college student making minimum wage.

You kidding? The 4.6 is a gigantic motor, like 2x the width of the 302. Getting it to fit and then doing exhaust will be a nightmare. That nightmare = $$$$$$

If youre going with anything besides a 302, get a 351, since there are companies that make everything you need to do it. Even a special oil pan and exhaust for it. lol

I understand the 4.6l is a monster of an engine. About 8.5in wider than a sb ford. I was just throwing out an idea. Like i posted, im not a fan of the carb. Not efficient enough for my liking. Yes, to put in a mod motor it will take $$$, but not as much as you would think. It will actually take a lot more time and test fitting. I have seen several with triton and a few with dohc engines, they we done on a budget.
But as far as ease of swap a sb ford would be the best bet. Just make sure you get the peoper motor mounts, oil pan and headers. They can be had as a kit for cheap.
