Default water temp gauge

Hi
I have here a 2001 Ranger 3.0 and the temp sender in the cluster doesnt work. I change the sender in the engine and it still dont move. The rare thing is that the sender has two terminals and the wire that is attached has only one wire. Is that normal?

I think mine only has one wire as well, but the gauge works.
