Engine HELP!
I don't know if I'll be able to explain this very well but I'll try.
Yesterday, while driving, my engine started to hiccup. At first it was only once or twice but then I started up a hill and even though I held my foot steady on the accelerator, the engine would give me the power then it would back off, give me the power then back off and it kept doing that. I figured, since I wasn't far for home to just turn around, put my hazards on, and go home in a low gear. Now I'm stuck trying to figure out what it could be. I don't really have the money to take it to a repair shop. Any ideas on places to start?

you want to rule out the cam syncro before you drive the truck again.....the cam syncro is on the passenger side near the firewall....is the cam syncro making any noise?.....if the cam syncro fails your engine will blow.........
You want to get a code reader and see if you have any codes.

Is there any way to get to the cam syncro without pulling the engine?

If it should, would the noise be really easy to make out because I'm not hearing much coming from that area. I only hear the noise of the engine.

Re: Engine HELP!
you would hear if the cam sync is making noise and you do NOT have to pull the engine to get to the cam sync. The cam sync can easily be mistaken for a squeaking belt for someone who wouldnt know the difference. Belts normally sound like a squeak and a bad cam sync normally sounds like a chirp. Of course this is not guaranteed. Easy way to find out if your belt is squeaking, take the belt off while the engine is cold and run it. However, a squeaky belt wont make the truck jump/buck/hiccup
Now... Is your truck squeaking/chirping? Is the truck throwing a check engine light? How many miles are on this truck?
^^ these are questions that you need to answer. Beating around the bush doesnt do any good.
And just so you know, any parts store should read your check engine light for you for free.

There's no chirping or squeaking, the check engine light is on and there's only 52k miles on my 01.

you need to read the codes......I would invest in a cheap code reader.....they are a priceless tool to have.....then post the codes here.......do not clear the codes by detaching the battery.....the codes are your clue......if you have a p0340? that points to the cam sensor.....

Re: Engine HELP!
Seems if it is hiccuping and loosing power, first I would check for vac leaks...then the battery/alternator if when it hiccups u are also losing elec power and lights are dimming.
Replace the fuel filter, check and clean the air filter or replace, also clean the MAF sensor and put some seafoam in the gas to clean the injectors. Also check/replace spark plugs and/or wires.

Re: Engine HELP!
I wouldnt be suprised if it was a misf. Either way a misfire and a cam sync are noth easy fixes if done properly and its most likely one of those two causing the problem. Get your codes read or buy a reader. You dont have to buy one of those high end code scanners. The cheaper ones will still get the job done

I read the codes and found out the problem resulted from a misfire on cylinder 3. I had just replaced the spark plugs a week ago so i figured it must be the wires. I bought a new set of spark plug wires today and now it runs like new. Thanks for all your guys' input.

#1 rule when you have an issue is to check for codes.
Codes readers are $20. Everyone smart enough to make it to this forum should own a code reader.
Glad you got it fixed.
