I've actually passed a lifted Taco when climbing that 8% grade to Weaverville. Guy didn't have his truck geared properly, I passed him with ease towing a trailer...funny.

i like mine. easy to work on and service, which is hard to find with an engine in just about any vehicle nowadays. 26 MPG on the highway (in the summer) without even trying. parts are fairly cheap and easy to find. it may be lacking on power, but it's not undrivable. it's got enough power to merge on the highway, and haul a good heavy load of junk around in the bed when needed. and other than the cam syncro issue (i think mine's starting to squeak ) they are reliable.

Great another 3.0/4.0 thread to join the other 800 threads...

Not everyone has a need for the extra towing power...my 3.0 towss my flatbed with my two atvs just fine.

Not everyone has the need to accellerate like a bat out of hell and burn expensive tires.

For most people its basic transportation back and forth to work and maybe a little fun on the weekends.

The 4.0 has 62 more horses....and gets "almost" the same fuel mileage, not the exact same...

They say the 3.0 is a car engine, hmm well now they are puttinf the 4.0 in the Taurus as well so that also makes it a car engine...

The 3.0s only have the cam sync issues, a $100 and 30 minute fix, while the 4.0s had massive timing chain issues...

It all depends on the owner and what he/she needs the truck for...and how they are going to use it and maintain it.

The 4.0 guys will bash the 3.0s and then a 5.0 comes up and shuts them all up.

Yes, another thing,, I've already gotten a motor replacement for my 4.0 FX4 due to a damn timing chain. But regardless. I love both of my rangers

I've owned both, though the 4.0 was in a 93 Explorer Sport (5 speed manual) and the 3.0 is in my 2000 Ranger (also 5 speed manual). Both 4x4s.

The 4.0 definitely had more power, and I actually got better gas mileage out of the Expo than I do out of the Ranger. Not much, but 1-2 mpg anyway.

Overall, I don't hate the 3.0. I just installed a new motor in the Ranger and stuck with a 3.0 instead of swapping in something bigger. I do wish it had just a few more horses, but I use it mainly as a daily driver and other than sometimes having to downshift to 4th on steeper hills on the interstate, I'm fine with the 3.0.

The bellhousing pattern is shared with more car engines than the offerings in the trucks (Tempos, Taurus, Probes, etc). Read the WIKI site, it even says "It was originally designed to be the optional engine in the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable." If it looks like a car engine, performs like a car engine, came in a lot of cars, it probably is a car engine. The 2.9L isn't much different, except they put a different intake on it with longer runners for the trucks versus the cars. They felt they needed a mid-way v6 engine in between, and it seems they decided to use the 3.0L over continuing on with the problematic 2.9L. Coincidentally it showed up in Rangers in '91, which was a year it was redesigned.

The 4.0s never came in the Tarus. The first car they were put I were the mustangs. But before they were in mustangs they were in the ranger. The reason ford put the 4.0 in the mustang was because at the time, the 4.0 was fords most powerful v6 that was already set up for a RWD platform.

Man I bought my ranger without knowing anything about them.
I have to agree the 3.0 is slow but it gets me to places I need, after all it is a truck, how fast do u expect it to go?
And I fixed many things on my 3.0 as of this day, and I have a feeling the truck will go another 100k miles.
I also fixed the cam sync, so now I have a peace of mind.
If the 4.0 has timing problem, I don't I know how to do it myself, I would rather have the 3.0

I like mine. And it was cheaper than a 4.0. Deal with it.

The timing chain only affected 01-02.5 rangers. And even then it is a rare occasion.

I have no issues with my 3.0 at all,NONE!!
It runs ,excellant, and purrs like a kitten, has plenty of power when needed.
I change oil every 3k,clean MAF,and IAC,often.
I get 18 mpg city,24+ highway.Still has original spark plugs,bet i'll squeeze
a few more when i change them.
Granted,i do drive like granny, but i get better mpg's,my engine will last longer, and avoid unnessesary stupid tickets. So, i'm a older guy and don't mind driving like that at all.
I LOVE MY 3.0
See ya,old retired guy
