You don't need the ecm the standard does not have any electronics on the tranny only for the reverse lights

----------

Also you have to see if the is no difference in the starter some starters have a different teeth on the gear

I forgot to ask. How do you know your ECM went out?

I bought the truck from the OO in 8/1/2013 for $900. It had a burnt exhaust valve. I just threw some heads on it(5/1/2014). Ford has many good engines, the 3.0 Vulcan is not one of them. I bought it for the price.

We might have a "know it all"noob? ECU very rarely fail. If there is a leak and water gets in that could be an issue?

My guess is he has another thread going maybe with a tranny issue. I also will guess he has a 5 speed... so the Ecu is irrelevant for his issue.

Why doesn't he need an ECM? Just because it has a standard transmission does not mean it doesn't need an ECU/ECM/PCM. Without it the truck won't start or run. My truck is a '99 with a standard and it has an ecu.

Most likely the computer isn't bad. It is probably another problem causing the comunication to be messed up I just fixed one with a bad DPFE sensor but it could be other things. What is the truck doing?

Check if the ECM is protected from rain. The one in my Ranger is directly under a vent where it can get rained on. This caused tranny's to burn out in Windstars in the 90's.
