Bad belt, pulley, or camshaft synchronizer?
Hi, i've been searching the forums trying to troubleshoot the problem my 3.0 98 4x4 ranger is having. I'm having a chirping sound from the engine bay. Apon further inspection I'm thinking it's the idler pulley. The reason I say this is because If i spray lubricant on the belt it stops, if it was the camshaft I don't think it would stop it from chirping. My belt looks fine and I see no cracking on the belt. The chirping sound rather then squeeling would lead me to believe it's not the belt . The sound seems to be more quiet when at higher rpms, however, this could just be the engine masking the noise. The noise is louder around the idler pulley, what do you guys think?

Pull the belt off, crank the engine and see if the chirp is still there, that will give you something to go on.

That won't cause any problems starting the engine with no belt?

Re: Bad belt, pulley, or camshaft synchronizer?
You can run the engine for short periods with no belt and it wont hurt anything. My idler pulley had been chirping at idle for over 140,000 miles (started doing it at 50k and now has almost 200k). It's starting to get worse so I may break down an spend the $8 on a new bearing, heck I may even splurge for a new belt while i'm in there. lol.

Re: Bad belt, pulley, or camshaft synchronizer?
I too am experiencing the chirp and with out actually listening to location assumed it was cam sync so ordered one from Rock Auto Motorcraft part and when working on the truck Monday had the hood open with engine running and noise is def from front of motor not sure which pulley so I ordered both and will replace them. Is there anything in particular I should know about replacing them such as tools needed etc. Thanks for the input.

Re: Bad belt, pulley, or camshaft synchronizer?
This is just the thread I was looking for! I hope I'm not rude jumping in on this but I'm new so here goes.... I have a 2000 Ranger 4x4 step side reg cab with the 3.0 vulcan and auto trans. I like this truck a lot so I have done some extensive tuning and troubleshooting on it to remove an annoying squeaking sound. I guess it is a chirp. I have been searching under squeak sound. I replaced the belt 3 times! I then replaced the belt tensioner, chirp reduced but still there. I then replaced the idler pulley sound still there. This is really is annoying because the truck runs great but this is really embarrassing and I gave this truck a severe tune up! It seems to do this more at idle than under acceleration and when it's damp then dry. I've tried 3 belts and cleaned all pulleys with degreaser each time. I am at a loss here. When running the engine without the belt(for a short time) no noise. Anyone with words of wisdom on this? G

Re: Bad belt, pulley, or camshaft synchronizer?
Wife's Taurus 3.0L Vulcan had the same problem. Replaced the idler pulley, whole tensioner, and put on a new Dayco belt. Still chirping. Taurus website I'm on had a post about using a Gatorback belt. Tried that ($56), and it worked. Still feel like I'm masking a waterpump problem, but pump doesn't leak and car never overheats. And we still haven't discussed the possibility of alternator pulley, power-steering pump, and air-conditioner pulley/clutch.

my 99 with 55k on it had a similar problem.....I figured the cheapest way out was to replace the belt.....Bingo,no more squeaking!.....

have you listened to the motor when running? if it's from the front end of the truck, that's the belt or one of the pullies. if it's from the rear, then it's the cam sensor. since the noise goes away with no belt, i'd assume it's from the belt or pullies. have you made sure that all of the pullies are clean of debris and spin freely? idler, tensioner, pumps, etc?

Re: Bad belt, pulley, or camshaft synchronizer?
Removed my belt today for inspection. It's old and cracked and whatnot but its not broken so I kept it (I'd rather spend the $40 on Christmas and other stuff right now). Here is what I found: on the GROOVED side of the belt there were several white spots and dots embedded in the rubber these spots were small pieces of rocks and grit got into the belt and wore into the rubber. I went around the entire belt and removed the grit by digging them out of the rubber with a razor blade, then I ran the grooved side of the belt over a wire wheel on my grinder to scuff it up. I used a hand held pneumatic wire wheel to scuff up and clean all of the pulleys (A/C, Crank, Water pump, Idler, Tensioner, Alternator, and PS pump) I re-installed the belt and fired it up. Belt is more quiet than I've heard in a long time. To be fair, it wasn't squeaking at the moment when I pulled it off but had squeaked when things got damp. It rained tonight and still no squeaking so I'm very happy with the results. Best part is it didn't cost me a penny, just my time.

Re: Bad belt, pulley, or camshaft synchronizer?
I have tried cleaning all the pulleys and my alternator is new hence new pulley. I replaced the tensioner and idler pulley and tried 3 different belts, including Dayco. Bye the way, I was always told to use MotorCraft belts to avoid squeaking, but I noticed the Motorcraft belt says, " Made in Thialand". I know that is of little consequence seeing that 60% or more of the truck is made in other countries. I love this truck but the squeak lives on, albeit much less often, almost gone, but still does it when everyone is in an earshot! I hope it's not the AC compressor pulley because that doesn't look to easy to remove.Interesting to note when belt is removed no squeak!

Re: Bad belt, pulley, or camshaft synchronizer?
Im having the same problem except mine never makes the chirping unless the truck is moving. Cant get it to make a sound parked in neutral and revving the motor. I thought it may be wheel bearings, but it doesn't do it all the time or at low speeds or when you turn or anything. The wheel bearings feel fine when trying to wiggle the tires after jacking it up of course. I took the bearings out and repacked them with new grease just in case and they look fine and feel fine. Can the cam sync make the chirping noise only while driving down the road ? The truck will chirp at different speeds and doesn't seem to change with speed or anything - it just chirps every few seconds?? cant see how to pinpoint it without riding on top of the motor driving down the road

Re: Bad belt, pulley, or camshaft synchronizer?
My Ranger has been making the same noise for the last couple of months now and since I had the day off today I decided to look into it.
The noise is definately coming from the front of the motor so took the belt off and sure enough it was noise free so I went and inspected all of the pullies and they all seemed fine at first, but when I went to put the belt back on I noticed that the clutch fan kinda wiggled a bit.
To make a long story short the water pump shaft has a mile of wiggle to it and I cant believe it doesnt leak coolant and I believe the chirp noise is water pump impeller blades rubbing the inside of the water pump housing.
The pump is pretty cheap as I have one on hold at Autozone for 14.99+ tax with a 1 year warranty and I will be changing it out tomorrow night.
