Question odd noise

hi all. i have a 2000 ranger that runs great. about a week ago it started making a squeaking noise from the engine.i do most of my own repair work but i can't figure this one out.to me it sounded like a squeakig pulley be it ac/ps/pb. it sounded like the noise was coming from back of the engine.i took off the serp belt just to make sure, startedit up and the noise was still there.it is at the back of the engine and sounds like it might be coming from around the tranny housing area.

any suggestions or answers would be great.thank you.

Default same noise, ur not alone

My 2000 S/Cab with the 4.0 makes the exact same weird noise.
I've tried the same diagnostics that you have and can't place it, trouble is the chirp/squeak is intermittent.
I'ts driving me crazy, seems to be loudest under the truck near the trans. bell hsg. area.
Hope other members can help !

Default same issue

Hey I found this site looking for info on the same noise...on my wifes 2000 4.0L I did find elsewhere that people have had a simmilar issue on the 3.0L where the cam sensor( rear of intake, like a disttibuter shaft) bushings dry out poor in a little motor oil and it stops. could be the same on the 4.0 but I have not been able to confirm yet. I broght my automotive stethoscope home to (hopefully) zero in on the sorce

Thanks, will look into it.
Seems that the cam position sensor is driven off this same shaft that used to run the dist. on those early motors that did have distributors.
Hope this is the problem, the noise is getting worse and even MORE annoying.
Will keep you posted

If the noise is coming from the top rear of the engine, it is very likely it is the cam position sensor/ synchro. If so, fix it asap. This drives your oil pump! When it quits making the irritating noise it will be because your engine has locked up!

Finally got off my duff and fixed it, besides, co-workers were ribbing me to no end !
The noise is from the cam position sensor shaft which extends thru the engine block at the rear of the engine, just behind the intake manifold.
You need to remove the upper intake plenum to gain access to the sensor itself, this needs to be removed to lubricate the sensor shaft.
Unless your a contortionist, it helps to remove the hood also, just 4 bolts holding it on.
Using a 1/4" ratchet, wobble extension and 5.5 mm socket, remove the 2 screws attaching the sensor, using a mirror just to see the rt. side screw helps also.
Once the sensor is out of the way you'll see the shaft itself, I used an oil can containing a mixture of 30 wt. and camshaft lube to squirt a few drops around the shaft.
Of course, the first time you do this will take some time, it took me 2 hours.
Button everything up and you're good to go.....
No more irritating squeak/chirp

Think about it, why is this area not getting lube? Everything inside of your engine is designed to be lubed by the oil pump. No lube at the top of the engine means there is a problem. When the squeak comes back follow the same steps until you get to the cam sensor/synchronizer then REPLACE IT! It's worth 60$ not to seize the engine.

Have you actually done this yourself?
The sensor itself has nothing to do with any lubrication issue.
If and when you've done one of these, maybe then you can post an intelligent response.....

What part of "Camshaft position sensor/synchronizer turns the oil pump" did not register? This takes the place of the distributor shaft since the distributor no longer exists on these vehicles. I'm no mechanical engineer, but I think the oil pump is somehow involved in the lube process. Maybe one of the mastertechs can explain it to us simple folk.

Perhaps you may need 'simple folk' explaining here, but I do not.
To even suggest that the " Camshaft sensor/synchronizer turns the oil pump" shows what you describe yourself as ' no mechanical engineer' , well you got that right.
The oil pump is driven off a shaft meshed with a gear from the cam, the cam position sensor does NOT drive this shaft.
Sir, you give new meaning to the phrase of a LOLO HAOLE....

Not to take sides, but tom is right. They call that noise the "chirp of death".. you need to replace the syncro shaft.. you did make the noise go away by oiling it but the shaft does turn the oil pump...there is a 7 page chat about this on another forum for rangers...i think rangerpowerspots or rangerstation. I would highley recommend changeing the whole thing....I know mine is chriping and I am going to change mine, the sensor and syncro shaft cost about 150. and it is a simple swap just mark the old one before you remove...JMO

The oil pump shaft slides up in to the camshaft syncro and the gear on the synchro drives both the synchro and the oil pump shaft. When it fails, it's EPIC fail. It is not worth it not to replace it. Also, do not replace it with anything other than OEM Motorcraft as the failure rate with the aftermarket part has been too high.

On a side note, I didn't remove the hood or anything else. It will pull straight out. You do have to push the wiring harness to the side, but I had mine changed in about 15 minutes.
