I have seen a 5.0 done. I don't think it would be much harder than small blocking an S10. But it also depends on whether you want to run fuel injection or carburator. Also hood fitment. I know they made some Exploders with 5.0s but not 100% sure on the swap or what it would take.

My truck is new enough though that there is Exploders the same year that have the 4.6l, with plenty of aftermarket support, plus all I would need is a wrecked exploder to get the wiring harness as well. I love to modify cars but at the same time as much as I am not a neat freak I like to make things look right. So this swap I'd want to make it look factory to a tee.

My other truck is a 2.2l 4 cyl 5 speed GMC Sonoma. I eat 3.0's for breakfast and that truck is not fast by any means! That just tells you to do more research before you buy. The 3.0 is a good engine. The unfortunate part is that most of the people that bought 3.0 engines from factory probably had no intentions of using the truck as hard as you or I or most of the guys on here had. The 4.0 I have I'd never trade. If you want a commuter I'd buy the 2.3 in the Ranger. Anything else 4.0. The 3.0 was a great engine in my Grandma's Sable lol our trucks are fat, not the best place for the 3.0

Gearing will cost you 300ish. And you could still do 70. Engine with turbo probably 3 grand at least. I've been building a turbo 2.2l for the Sonoma for about 4 years now. I'm no where near done, and by the time I am I'll be in it at least 4 grand. That's mostly in just computer and parts.

Start slow, lol study everything. It's only worth it if you pay to have it built once. Not twice. You need to look at the power you want to build. I want to make 300 or so hp with the Sonoma. That meant I had to build the whole engine, not just slap injectors on and a turbo. You also have to upgrade brakes on some cars because they use vacuum to actuate the brake pressure on top of the force of your pedal. With a turbo you are now in a positively charged system. Naturally aspirated engines act as a big air pump and use vacuum caused by the cylinder drawing down causing low pressure pulling air into the cylinder. Typically building a vehicle to run 12 lbs of boost or less you can just upgrade the fuel system on the engine and run it. Anymore and you need to look at better internal parts. You also need a new computer that has fuel maps that are correct for turbo applications and send the right amount of fuel for the amount of air in your cylinders. Plus you have to run oil lines to your turbo, you have to get the correct size turbo so there isn't to much lag, to much boost, too little boost etc.

300 is doing it yourself. Lol I'm a mechanic by trade. So for me it's easy, well not easy but doable. You also have to have the right parts and a good place to do it. And now that I think of it that is just for one diff, so probably 600.

Building a turbo engine is not for the faint of heart lol or light in the pocket book.

I'll help you do the gearing. I might as well teach you to do it. Hit me up in mid May when I graduate. Where would you be taking the auto tech classes at? I'd say definately go for that. There is always money to be made there.
