Default Temperature guage

I have a 98 ranger 3.0/V6. The temperature gauge is not reading. How do I tell if this is a bad thermostat, a bad gauge, or just a fuse (I could not find a specific fuse for this)?
Thanks

umm you will need a volt meter and your fuse for it should be either on the inside of the driver side near the steering wheel between were the door shuts or pop the hood and there is a fuse box on the driver side near the fire wall but mostly those are your relays. Test your voltage for the fuse, then test the gauge by removing your vinal dash board on the drivers side and there is 4 bolts i believe holding the gauge cluster in place. If all your connections are good then remove your thermostat boil water and put the thermostat in the water, if it opens its not your thermostat (the mechanical piece) if all that is in working order you have a problem with the sensor.

You could unplug the wire from the sending unit and ground it. If the temp gauge pegs out it's the sensor. No special tools needed, almost idiot proof but I've worked with some exceptional idiots!

I have the same issue and a 98 with the 3.0

Is this the temp sensor?

http://www.fordrangerforum.com/membe...sensor%3F.html

If so it does not look too difficult to get to. Someone mentioned grounding the lead to the sensor in order to test. Which lead? There are two.

Is the red stuff on the threads locktight?

Thanks
