Default '01 3.0L Ranger rough Idle and quits.

Hi Guys,

I'm new to the forum here so I'll try to give as much info about my problem as possible.

I've got a 2001 Ford Ranger 3.0L 5spd with about 120000 miles on it. It sat all summer and did not run. Last week I started it and it fired up but I noticed it was making a strange snapping noise. I popped the hood and found that the ignition coil had a crack in it. So I replaced it and fired her up again. She idled rough and quit. Turned her over again and again it idled rough but stayed going. I put her in gear but had now power and she quit. I thought it was likely the fuel filter so I changed it and now it seems to be worse. Now to even start it I have to hold the gas peddle to the floor. I haven't put the code reader on it yet because I loaned it to a friend so I'm just waiting to get it back. I did notice this morning while trying to figure out whats wrong with it that the check engine light is coming on.

I read other posts with similar problems and suggestions were to clean or replace the MAF. Just wondering if others have had similar problems and what advice you have?

Try cleaning your MAF like you stated and then let us know. Cleaning your IAC(Idle Air Control) would be the next step if your MAF cleaning doesnt fix the problem.

Get some good gas in there. Do a tuneup. ie. Clean maf, tb, iacv etc. Check for vacuum leaks. Pull the air intake and make sure no critters got in there. Change air filter. Etc etc etc.

if you can get it running, id seafoam the motor. open your air box, check for power from the fuel pump. sounds to me like your motor isnt getting air, which is why the MAF is out of range. Your airbox is probably a nest for some animal

So I checked the air filter and its clean - I think I replaced it last winter. I cleaned the MAF and connections to the dpfe. Fells like I'm not getting enough fuel but I can't be sure since I don't have a way to check it. I did watch the line line in on the fuel filter when the key was turned on and could see the line pressurize but I can't say if its pressurizing enough. I think I'm going to have get her towed to a garage. Thanks for the help and suggestions.

Oh I should mention though that one of the vacum lines that runs into the dpfe sensor keeps coming off if/when I get it running and give it a shot of gas???

Providing your hoses are in good shape the hoses are popping off because something in the exhaust is clogged..........I wonder if something crawled up there while the truck was sitting? Think, Axel Foley and the Banana in the tailpipe!!

@modelageek thanks for the advice, the catalytic converter was plugged - not sure why or what happened, but replaced it and now the truck is running perfect. Thanks for all the help.
