Tell him to keep off the gas is the main thing you can do. Its a newer truck, so just do regular maintenance. CAI's don't work, so don't be fooled. Neither ranger v6 is going to get above 19-20 combined.

I agree i have a 3.0 with 4x4 and 32'' tires and i get like 17-18 mpg city, so he needs to be lighter on the skinny pedal.

It also depends on what tires he is running and what gear ratio he has in the rear. If you have 31+ tires and are running 3.55's, you should probably go 3.75+

Im in sacramento too :-)

The best change to my mpg was driving style I swear. Got my best mpg going 60, if i'm low on cash I don't go past 65. No hard braking. If his acceleration.goes past 2500 RPMs, he is not saving gas.

Tire pressure tire pressure tire pressure! 30 front, 35 rear

No AC

and bigger tires help highway mpg (got 22 best on my 31s) but my avg is still 17 due to city driving

My 98 3 liter has two smaller cats.. I get 15-16 or so, but I have 31s and am not so light on the skinny pedal.. I usually shift around 3g on the tach too, depends how I'm feeling lol..

My 91 averages 17 mpg, like everyone else said, less skinny pedal. Coasting is your friend!

Damn how do you guys do it my truck is an 01 edge 4x2 auto and I can't get more than maybe pushing it only 12 mpg what can I do... I'm slow out of the lights and on the highway I don't go faster than 60 cause of a bent drive shaft. So give me some ideas for now at least until I start the ultimate build for my truck... Oh and I'm in Florida so no hills or steep inclines to worry about.

I think having a five speed really helps, but there are a lot of factors involved but a big thing is routine maintenance. Fixing that driveshaft might help, I feel like that would strain the engine somehow, and if not it still can't be good. Your brakes could be sticking, there's a lot of possibilities..

Lots of things can cause bad mileage. Clogged fuel filter, under inflated tires, big tires with a tall gear ratio, injection problems, dirty MAF, lead foot, but first I would get that driveshaft replaced..

I just bought mine a few weeks ago, took a 3hour road trip on Saturday to enjoy the weather, I got 20.8 and that was with 2 people and 400lbs of sand bags. I might have been able to eek out 22 without the extra weight. 3.0 auto driving like a grandpa and using my cruise whenever possible.

^ yep. He's exactly right. It can make that big of a difference.

I did the same. 120 mile round trip for my commute. First day I drove like I used to normally drive. Hard, fast, slightly above the speed limit and I got 17-18 at best.

Next day I accelerated slow, slightly under the speed limit, and coasted to stops. Weeks out 22 mpg.

Sure I have a 4.0 and not a 3.0, but it just goes to show how much driving style affects it. Ps I'm on 32" tires with 4.10 gears.
