Annoying squeak in the engine bay
I have a 2000 Ranger and I can't seem to pin-point where this annoying squeak is coming from. Its there when I start the truck and also when I drive it. The longer I drive, the more it goes away, but its still noticeable.
I've already replaced the idler pulley, belt tensioner pulley, and a new belt. Any other ideas?

Could be the alt. bearings.
Edit: I had the same problem. Bought some of lithium greese in a spay can and spyed it on all the bearings. Squeak went away and the grease repels water some. I've also use a silicone lube in a spray can, with good results.

hmm thats interesting. I replaced my alternator last month. do you think it could be a water pump pulley? I may just try the spray grease and hope it fixes it. It's annoying

Go buy an engine stethoscope, they are cheap and they work great.

Wouldn't he be able to pull off the main belt and spin one pulley at a time to find the squeak? Thats what my Auto Tech friend said.

Process of elimination. Take the belt off and start the truck...still there...cam sync. If it's not there then spin each pulley one at a time till you find it.

When you find it. I WANT TO KNOW! Ive had the same problem for a while now. There isn't nothing like having a nice looking truck that has a squeek.

Due to a design flaw, the 3.0 cam synchronizer top bushing gets oil starved, and that's what causes the squeaking.
If the synchro's not replaced, the bushing will either bind up the shaft and strip the gears, or the bushing will grind itself up and create enough play to destroy the vane and sensor.
It's not a question of 'if' your 3.0 will have a cam synchro to fail, but 'when'.
