Default is the 3.0 better than the 4.0 v-6?

I just bought a 99 ranger extra cab V-6 and I'm not sure if its the 3.0 or 4.0, is one engine better than the other?? or are they both good v-6 engines?? what can you guys tell me about both engines?? I got a good deal on it, its the extra cab step side 4X4 but the cat was stollen and completely missing, so I need to do up a nice exhaust with fre flow cat.... and the driver seat was stolen, but otherwise pretty nice...

The only real benefit to the 3.0 over the 4.0 is that it costs less. The 4.0 has much more performance, and is rated for the same MPG. The 3.0 will get you where you're going though, many people have the 3.0 and like it.

Drive a 1999 3.0 OHV then drive a 2001+ 4.0 SOHC. you'll hate the 3.0! (i know I did)

I own the 4.0 and absolutely love my engine! Its peppy and powerful! I drove the neighbor's 99' Ranger with the 3.0 and was very unimpressed. My 4.0 would run circles around that thing and I'm not just saying that. It was weak taking off and had no power imo. Not saying that its a bad engine, because from what I've read, they are very reliable engines; I just wouldn't own one...lol. There is a saying around here about a 3.0... The power of a 4 cylinder with the gas mileage of a V8...lol. Best of luck to u with it though

lol, i didnt choose my ranger and it came with the 3.0. like said, the 4.0 can run circles around the 3.0, but i think as far as reliability...the 3.0 just cant be beat. it will run forever, longer than the frame will last (maybe a little exaggeration). as long as you do routine maintenance on that engine, it will last a good 300,000+ miles

How long do you think the 4.0 will last if you take care of it. Mines about to push 200,00.

Thanks Conor (and everyone else) thats all I neede to hear.....Reliabilty is more important than power to me, I'll finds ways to give it more power, trust me......I used to work on race cars and bikes. I don't care what people say on here, you can improve any engine. it may not have more power than the 4.0 but you can get more power out of it or any engine even the 4 cyl., especially when you take into consideration like conor says that their know for reliability (thats a great starting point for any performance engine). BTW conor, I'm moving to Ft. Meyers Florida in June so I'll be sort of a neighbor......lol

IMO, a 4.0 will last as long as any 3.0 if properly taken care of.

lol nice, the biggest problem down here you have to worry about is all the salt in the air. if your within like a mile of the beach and leave your truck out overnight, expect a layer of salt to cover the windshield lol.

probably, i havnt owned a 4.0 or seen any that have over 300,000 miles, but we have a couple 3.0 rangers that were well over 300,000 (they were company trucks)
all in all, the ranger and its engine choices are pretty darn reliable, a lot of it is up to the owner though
