Ha, ha...I've never seen a "raped ape" don't think I want to either (your painting a nasty picture in my head....) but I'm sure your 4.0 is fast....

yeah im sure it can last the same. The rod stroke ratio is a little bit worse then the 3.0L but not by much. 3.0L has a little less side pressure then the 4.0 but not sure if its that much to matter. im gonna be supercharging my 3.0 and im hoping to put down anywhere from 220-250whp so i mean they can handle being built. but its expensive to get into the internals if your going to go past the 250whp mark. biggest problem with the 3.0L is the heads. once you port and polish the heads with backcut valves then you'll have a nice gain. plus you can add roller rockers which is about a 10-15hp gain. the 1.8:1 have put down 18whp down but i think its a bit harder to run then the 1.7:1's. And Vintage i laughed at that one. Right now im running 30" general grabber with a 4.10 rear end and get around 21.5mpg. so its not to bad.

i've had two 3.0s, they both felt stronger than the 4 cylinder rangers that i have driven, i think my 3.0 feels better than the 4.0 in my dad's 95 exploder, but i have also driven SOHC explorers and they feel a lot stronger than the old one, if i had it to do over and had the money i'd go for a newer 4.0 ranger, but the 3.0 does ok for what it is, i average 18mpg in my 2wd, my 4x4 got highway mileage that was almost unbelievable, 25-27 mpg

My dad had an 89 ranger with the 2.9 OHV (the 4.0's predecessor) with well over 300K on it (it was at 38*,*** when he sold it). My 4.0 has 187K on it, and all it needs is a new valve.

Routine maintenance is all they need.

I have 232,156 on my 01. I got it at 205K and I've replaced the belt, alternator, and 2 pullies. EASY.

It runs PERFECT.


3.0, I think it will outlive me. I'm 18.
