Cylinder 1 misfire / Cam Syncro
I replaced my cam syncro about a month ago because I heard the chirp of death. Very soon after I got a cylinder 1 misfire code. I replaced the plug, and it seemed fine. Now after about 300 miles I've got another cylinder 1 misfire. Could this be correlated to possibly a misalignment of the syncro?

Re: Cylinder 1 misfire / Cam Syncro
A missaligned synchro can cause a P0301 it's possible but in my experience it also causes the vehicle to cut out at WOT around 4,000 RPM and then resume accelerating. I would suggest that you set the engine at TDC again and reinstall your synchro, also be sure not to install a Doorman synchro, they are known for failures soon after installation.

Re: Cylinder 1 misfire / Cam Syncro
Seems fine at WOT. Only problem I have is that at the initial startup the idle is a bit rough and initially is sluggish, but if I just give it some gas it's good to go.

Did you use the motorcraft cam sync? What kind of plug did you use? I never replace a plug without replacing the wire because the connector inside the boot always seems to get screwed up with you pull the plug. Misfires seem to be common around here, Probably just another plug/wire issue for you.

Re: Cylinder 1 misfire / Cam Syncro
I think if it were a plug or wire issue the misfire would be constant throughout the entinre RPM range, if he is off 1 tooth when reinstalling the cam synchro it can cause this issue. I still think that if this wasn't happening before the replacement that it's obvious that it's the synchro position or it is faulty.

I see your point about if the misfire started after the cam sync replacement, I would have to agree on that part and a good chance it is the problem. However, I had a coil pack on its way out and never cause a CEL and would only buck when I was coasting at about 45mph and barely touch the gas. Idled fine and accelerated fine as long as you didnt barely tap the gas.

Exellent point, a weak coil could cause the same issue. I had a weak battery and it caused a misfire as well, you may want to have the battery checked.

Re: Cylinder 1 misfire / Cam Syncro
I'm very happy to see you two collaborating and not causing a huge mess, which seems to be somewhat common on these boards.
I had similar issues very soon before I heard the chirp. I replaced my syncro with OEM, and plugs are always motorcraft or autolite. I did not replace the wire. I changed out my plugs and wires two years ago, I thought maybe I just had a faulty plug? Seems to soon to replace plugs after 20k miles. Is there a process to check the coil pack?

Re: Cylinder 1 misfire / Cam Syncro
Take the wire out of the coil pack and rest the wire just on the top of the coil, the spark will jump from the coil to the wire. Make sure you don't touch anything when it's running lol, do one wire at a time and you may find a dead portion of the coil.

Re: Cylinder 1 misfire / Cam Syncro
I'll see if I can get to that tonight.
Odd thing, the CEL turned off today. I made no changes, physical symptoms still present though.

Re: Cylinder 1 misfire / Cam Syncro
I have this exact same issue, did you end up ever solving the issue with the troubleshooting listed above?
New:
Motorcraft Cam Synchro, aligned with tool
rough idle afterwards
new plugs/wires
Random check engine light, sometimes turns off. Cylinder 1 misfire code.
I would do anything to avoid a shop on this one.
