Default Tensioner Pulley or Belt?

On cold damp mornings(we have a few of those in the PNW) when I first start my truck it chirps. After it warms up it goes away. I checked the belt and pulleys. I'm going to replace the belt with a Gator Back. What I want to know is should I replace the tensioner pulley at the same time?

Make sure it isn't your fan clutch. At 100K miles I replaced the belt, tensioner assembly and idler pulley.

+1 on the fan clutch. If you wait too long you will eventually notice a "drag" on the power output (sluggish). Go ahead and choke up the funds for a fan clutch, idler pulley, tensioner, and belt. Might as well do the thermostat and gasket while you have access to that area. This sounds like the exact problem I was having when I started looking through the forums.

I have that same issue and I don't think it's your serpentine belt as much as it is your AC clutch squeaking? I might be wrong?

Default Re: Tensioner Pulley or Belt?

I recently bought a 99' 2WD ext cab ranger with the 3.0. I encountered the squeaky belt soon after buying it. Here is what I did to fix it:

1: replaced belt with a Duralast belt from autozone. (Still squeaking)

2: Spray the new belt with belt dressing. (Quit squeaking for a few minutes then the squeak became worse than before spraying belt dressing)

3: Removed the belt cleaned the belt with mineral spirits and then washed with soap and water. Cleaned pulleys with mineral spririts and a brush, then rinsed them with accetone. reinstalled Duralast belt. (still squeaking)

4: Replaced idler and tensioner pulleys. Reinstalled Duralast belt (They needed replaced anyway but still squeaking)

5: cleaned pulleys with a die grinder and a wire wheel. Reinstalled Duralast belt (still squeaking)

6: Replaced the Duralast belt with a Dayco belt from Autozone. (Have driven approximately 400miles no squeak so far)

Default Re: Tensioner Pulley or Belt?

went through multiple belts and multiple pulleys before i figured mine out. i bought a gates brand tensioner and haven't had a problem with it since. not even factory pulleys(by factory i do not mean motorcraft, i mean factory....like original) held up like this gates does. i still have the occasional chirp on high moisture mornings, but they go away soon. hope this helps.
