well we cracked and took it in to Ford. They concluded that it as the General Electric Module and it would be $600 to replace. Poo.

Dude no don't just go an pay that... I though it was my gem module too... I found another matching one and put it in.. It didn't solve the problem!!
Odds are u will drop several hundred for it and that's not going to solve it!!!

And $600. Wow when i asked my dealership they said it was $350.

The gem module, on mine is behind the radio mounted to the left side, one screw and it slides and locks into place, then there are three wire harnesses i think connected to it.

Yeah my dad said screw that. A previous mechanic had told us that it might be our GEM module so we went to the junk yard and got one that was a close match but not exact and it didn't work. We can live without the 4x4 on the ranger. I saw one on ebay and i'm wondering if it would work or if would have to be reprogrammed.

If u get a new/used GEM, its best to make sure u get on with the same numbers on it.
I was lucky to find one that matched mine. No programming is necessary.

But I am telling u, ur problem is more than likely either in the relay box down there or the fuse box on the driver side.

I had the same dam issues man, the lights would blink completely randomly, sometimes several days, then it would go weeks without doing it. Even worse in the winter, because if the rougher roads.

Next would be to actually check the shift motor, hell that is a $70 replacement, or an hour or two to tear apart and clean and rebuild.

In my opinion the dealership and other places are going to say its the GEM, and then have u buy a new one, and watch you come back with the same issues, just so they can make more money.

I retract my retractable retraction. I had stated that while moving the wires around I heard faint click. But when I actually removed fuse #26 I could hear and feel the relay click very clearly. I pushed in the wires but it made no difference. We were toying around with it in the driveway yesterday and it was working, But then it stopped working and started flashing the 4wd high low lights. It was also in 4wd High when it started flashing so right now were stuck in 4wd High. My dad told me to order the GEM module from ebay for $120. Waiting for that to come in. If it still doesn't work, we'll probably take the shift motor out and rebuild it.
