Default oil pan leaking... take out engine?

I have a very slow oil leak. Ill put a half a quart of oil in about every 1500 miles or so and it will make it full of oil until abother 1500 miles.
The leak is either from my timing chain gasket or my oil pan. Its pretty hard to pin point.
I am wanting to just replace both the timing chain gasket and oil pan gasket so my question is, will I have to pull the engine? Timing chain gasket can be done with the engine still in.
This may be a stupid question but I forget what it looks like down there and Im not sure if you can just drop the pan. I assume the engine has to come out though.

You could unbolt the motor mounts and disconect from the trans and pull the motor up enough so that you could drop the pain to do the gasket. ive dont it that way a few times on a few trucks.

I just found some more thread on this topic, apparently it can be a pain in the ass.

if it were the oil pan leaking, wouldnt it leave a puddle? I have NEVER left ONE drop but there is oil on the front of the engine. If it were leaking from the timing chain gasket would it just leak all over the front of the engine? My reasoning would be since the timing chain gasket is not really as exposed as the oil pan that if it were to leak a little it would be more likely to leak onto the engine, which is were all the oil is.

You can replace the front seal without removing the cover Bud.
