Ok so I am looking at getting a Taurus motor to drop into my 98 ranger 3.0.

How can I find out what motor my ranger has?
Is it the dohc or sohc?

I found a 3.0 from a Taurus on Craigslist that says:
3.0 Duratec V6 24 valves DOHC

I have found numerous ads with 3.0l motors that raise questions.

What would be the best fit?
There's alot of Taurus motors available but they seem to have different descriptions listed.

So what does SOHC and DOHC stand for?
I was thinking Single Overhead Cam and Dual Overhead Cam?????? Or am I a retard???

If so, wouldnt a Dual be better????

no you were right and yea DOHC would be better...they generally make more power than SOHC/pushrod motors

Then that makes really no sense, if the DOHC makes more power, why is it in the Taurus and the Ranger gets the SOHC????

So do Taurus cars come with both motors? So some have a DOHC and others have SOHC?
I know some people when their ranger 3.0 motors goes out, they swap in a Taurus 3.0.
So would they have to find a Taurus with a SOHC motor? Or will a DOHC motor still work in the ranger??

the taurus got the 3.0 vulcan as the base motor and the DOHC 3.0 was optional... and the 3.0 vulcan is pushrod...meaning the cam is in the block not in the head

So if i wanted to put a taurus motor into my 98 project truck, which one would be better, or which one would work?? Just stick with the SOHC, find a SOHC taurus motor???

Ok alright, so stick with the Vulcan motor SOHC and not the DOHC one.

the vulcan 3.0 IS NOT sohc...its a pushrod motor meaning the cam is in the block and the valves are opened/closed by pushrods...there are no cams in the head

So the PUSHROD is a motor all on its on, not a SOHC or a DOHC??

Sorry bout the confusion.
One guy earlier said my ranger was a SOHC, then another said it "could have the pushrod too"

98-01.5 2.5 Lima SOHC
01.5-11 2.3 Duratec DOHC
92?(not sure when they came out)-08 3.0 Pushrod
92-00 4.0 Pushrod
01-11 4.0 SOHC
