i would think if they are saying that for an inspection they are just out to make some cash off of you.

hopefully some of the guys will chime in on the tech part of your question.

Get a quart of mercon v Automatic transmission fluid. this is what your power steering fluid is. use a turkey baster to extract the fluids from the reservoir. jack the front of your truck up so the wheels are off the ground and start by extracting all the fluids from your reservoir . when the reservoir is empty, start your truck and move the steering wheel all the way to the left and to the right, this pumps more fluid back into the reservoir. keep repeating and extracting the fluid until there is none left. fill the reservoir back up and then repeat the process as needed.

i am a lube tech/tech in training and part of my job is to inspect fluids. i never reccomend flushes of any fluids unless its needed. if the fluid is dark, dirty, over the mileage, it needs a flush. if its a trusted shop they wouldnt say it if it didnt need it.

besides if your going to flush it then u must think its bad as well. . . . .

ha bull shit i hear of people getting told all the time that this fluid or that fluid needs flushed and the fluid is just fine...hell one of the big car places told a customer of mine that their powersteering fluid needed flushed right after I just chaged their pump, but i flushed it after I installed the pump

^does the fluid smell burnt? is it black? if yes to either/both of them its due for a flush...we use those questions at work to see if a car needs a PS flush

This is one of my pet-peeves........Your power-steering should be "flushed". The way I flush it is I disconnect the return hose and add a hose to it and stick it in a bucket. You might have to cap off the hole at the pump. then I have someone start the truck and I keep filling the reservoir until the fluid that comes out is bubbling pink, almost like it is alive again. I buy one more quart then the system holds. The whole process takes about 15 minutes (once you get the hose and cap) and cost $10-20. Steering racks start at around $600 installed........No one could ever convince me that on this 10 year old truck with milky fluid that what I just described is absolutely the correct method.......and the right thing to do......in the event you have no skills at all and no money to pay someone I would concede that the turkey baster is a good temporary solution to removing some of the milky fluid.............I have done many of these on cars with 100k that are 5 years old and the fluid comes out like chocolate milk

The recommended PS fluid is regular Mercon AKA=ATF.here i s a link to an owners manual if you need one https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenan...ls/default.asp. I would take it as a good omen that you joined this site. these trucks need maintenance to prevent costly repairs. if you don't know the maintenance record I would start figuring it out. I would immediately change the fuel filter. you most likely will need the tool $10 and the filter costs $10. The 1st time it can be a little bit of a pain but after that it takes 10 minutes. I also would clean the MAF with CRC MAF cleaner. Check the air filter. check fluid level in rear diff, etc. feel free to ask me any questions . we have similar trucks and I have done just about everything to mine at one time.........depending on your skills and enthusiasm flushing the tranny is always a good idea.

also you created a signature. which around here makes you a Hero.......however I would add more details, ie, Mileage, Cab? Ac? ABS?

Also..........i believe you have the Vulcan engine........2 issue with the Vulcan are head gasket problems that come from a neglected cooling system. You might consider flushing the cooling system. there are lubricants in coolant that wear out even if the fluid is not dirty. again this is where figuring out your maintence history comes in. agqain this is a cheap and easy item $25.

the other issue is with the Cam syncro shaft. it is recommended that at 80k the cam syncro is replaced. This is a little more costly but you can at least be aware if you ever hear a 'belt squeak" it could be the the cam syncro shaft. when it breaks the engine keeps running but the oil pump stops..the engine is toast in a matter of seconds....
