Default water pump?

i was driving home today and i started to hear a sequel and a rattle coming from the engine. now i do know that it was not a rod that snapped. once i got the hood open i had smoke coming out of my tail pipe and oil intake. after 300.00 in a tow bill getting it to my house i got in it and looked some more. my water reservoir was empty.. i put some water into it and it drank it right up. no leaking from any hose or nothing. i looked at the cap to the oil intake and had just a bit of a milky mix on the cap not on the rim or any thing. the dip stick was nice and clean. so the only thing i can think of is that its the water pump. if any one may know or have some thoughts go a head and chime in. thanx

I don't see anything in this description that would indicate anything to do with the water pump. Several things...

1) You don't refill the cooling system by putting water in the tank. On a cold engine, fill the radiator all the way. Start the engine and let it warm up with the cap still off. When the thermostat opens, water will start to flow through the radiator and the level will probably drop. Keep adding more coolant until it levels off full and stays that way. Put the cap back on. The tank should then be filled half way. Done.

2) The white steam you saw coming from the tailpipe and crank case would tend to indicate a blown head gasket. Not seeing contamination on the dipstick doesn't negate the other two places you had steam where there shouldn't be. It sounds to me like coolant was critically low. Why or when I can't tell you. The steam and noise could just simply be due to overheating from low coolant without a head gasket problem. Hard to say.

3) Please elaborate on everything else. Did the noise go away? What is it doing now? What was the engine temperature doing?

4) Best advice I can give you is to properly refill it like I described and see what happens. You can't diagnose anything until you fix what appears to be critically low coolant.

rite now its not doing any thing. had it towed and i pushed it into the barn. wont be able to do much till morning. all the noise that i did have was just like a hard shaking and the squeal from the pulley. once i shut her down on the side of the road and let her set for a bit it did fire back up with the oil gauge shaking back and forth fast then it shut down. i never had any kind of ping, bang or metal hitting metal kind of sounds. it was driving hard up the hills before i was able to pull over. kinda like it had to struggle up the hills

Did you notice the temperature gauge when all this was happening?

the temp was siting below the half way mark. witch aint out of the ordinary. i did go out and try coolant in the radiator and did not find a leak. the coolant reservoir has a rust type of build up in it. my next step now is to slowly tear down and check my heads and gaskets. i do have a relay strong " sweet " smell coming from the engine.. still have not tried to crank it over at this time.

That would be sign #3 of a head gasket leak. If it walks like duck, quacks like duck, and looks like a duck, its probably a duck. Sucks but at least you know what the problem most likely is. Crap in the reserve tank is pretty normal. I don't think that indicates anything else you need to be worried about.
