Default Oil pressure problem on my 3.0L... Help

I've got a 2000 3.0L and my oil pressure gauge has been acting funny. In the mornings, when I start it up, theres NO oil pressure and the check gauge lights up. Then as I start to drive, it toggles between the middle (where it should be) and zero (below the L line). Could this just be the gauge acting up? Is there a sending unit I could try to replace?

Replace the oil pressure sensor and that should take care of the problem. If that doesn't then you may want to start checking the wiring.

I have a 2001 Ford Ranger XLT and my oil guage is doing the exact same thing. I have read that it could be a sending unit. Would a bad oil pressure sensor cause the check engine light to come on or would there be a code for it? I just found out that mine has PO303 (cylinder #3 misfire). Now I'm about to start addressing that issue, but I would still like to know what's up with the oil guage and is it something serious or something that could really do damage to my truck.

have you looked at the cam sychronizer? or cam position sensor? what ever its called, its the sensor that takes the place of a distributor, goes down into the engine at the back of the intake manifold and i've read that they wear out on 3.0s, it wore out on mine and my engine seized, its easy to pull it out and check the teeth on it, just throwin an idea out there
