Overheating & No Heat?????
Ok, here we go. I have read tons of posts and still confused...lol
99 Ranger 3.0 Flex Fuel, Automatic, about 165000 miles, radiator changed recently & I just changed the thermostat & flushed radiator last night. Still overheating! I do not see any white smoke from exhaust, no coolant leaks that I can see. HELP!
Temp gauge raises at highway speeds...65-70 MPH. Seems if I just do in town driving, even stop & go, no issues with raising temp, at least not as quickly as when I am at highway speed. I can drive around town for an hour with no issues. But highway speed for 15-20 minutes temp go up, probably about 1/4 way from red line on gauge.
Is changing water pump my next step??
Also, the heater is not working now. Read on this forum about a Blend Door situation...could it be this or something else???? Maybe after water pump changed I will have heat??
Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Overheating & No Heat?????
Did you install the thermostat backwards. The spring side goes toward the engine.
Come to think of it if you had installed it backwards you would not been able to properly bleed the air out of the system when you installed the coolant.

Re: Overheating & No Heat?????
It was installed correctly, yes. Spring side down and the side that said "Towards Rad" is facing radiator.
You think it may be air in the system? What best way to bleed or burp it?

Re: Overheating & No Heat?????
To bleed it, take the radiator off when the engine is off and COLD.
Start the motor and let it get to operating temperature (make sure you have the heat on and full blast while it's heating up).
When the motor reaches operating temperature, you should have heat coming out of your vents.
As the coolant drops in the radiator, add more to top it off every time it drops. When it finally stops dropping (this is getting the air bubbles out), put the cap back on.
You said you have no heat. I am thinking you have a clogged heater core.

Re: Overheating & No Heat?????
sounds like a circulating problem to me. Not cooling the engine down and not flowing thu the heater core. Thats not to say it is NOT circulating, but not enough. Possible water pump fins are gone, wore out.

Re: Overheating & No Heat?????
That's what I was wondering, change the water pump and see what happens.

Re: Overheating & No Heat?????
If that's the same kind of 3.0 my 89 Taurus had, at least the water pump is easy as hell to change, and only like $25 bucks to boot! :]
Let us know what you find!

Re: Overheating & No Heat?????
I have the water pump already. Been reading online how to do and looked at some videos, seems like hardest part is getting to some of the hard to reach bolts. But it will take me twice as long, always does.

Re: Overheating & No Heat?????
The heater core is the furthest away and with a failing pump, it will often get nothing.

Huh??
Ran into first problem trying to get fan clutch off. Bolts holding pulley onto water pump are not long enough to use the tool I borrowed from Advanced. Read on here to try a pair of vise grips, is that best bet? I do not know of any other way.

Re: Overheating & No Heat?????
I cut mine off. I had a hellova time, but I also put a flex fan on. Maybe a strap wrench to hold the pulley might be enough?
