Default strange sound when idling.

so ive noticed while waiting in lines for carls jr. and at lights that sometimes my engine will make a relatively loud clunk sound and i can feel it shake the truck. it only happens once and a while. when it happens it happens at a consistent repetitive pace (about every 10-20 seconds). i have absolutely no idea what it could be. to me it sounds like instead of gas im pumping rocks into my engine, even though im probably way off with that idea. is this normal or should i be concerned? and if so what could it be because ill probably take it into the dealer and get it fixed if its something that needs work.

After reading your first post, I was going to ask if this happens when your heat or AC is on. I see you pointed that out in your second post.

Mine occasionally makes a similar noise, but I think it only occurs once, a few seconds after I start it up - and with either the heat or AC running. If your problem and mine are related, it might have something to do with the compressor, since I've pretty much isolated that as being the source of the noise on my truck. Try to see if you notice the noise when you have no fan settings on.

Its probably the compressor cycling. The a/c runs (helps dry out the air for the defroster) in all positions other than the upper vent and floor heat. The compressor will sometimes make a clunk sound when it cycles on. Does it on my ranger and on the crown vics I used to drive.

yeah i thinks it the ac/heater. i dont get the sounds when there off. so if it is the compressor would this be an issue that i should be concerned about? after all theyre rather large clunks that sometime shake the whole truck.

Does your truck have a heater control valve maybe inline with the heater hose?

When this happens, do you feel it in the floor? That's what mine does. Mine will go BAM!! out of nowhere. Fan works fine, truck runs fine, but that seems abnormal to me...

i feel it in the floor or on the pedals mostly. but there will be the occasional one that makes a big clunk and it will give the whole truck a good shake. like someone ran into it.
