Jerks and dies when warming up
I just purchased this Ranger and I love the truck, but I'm having a minor problem I need help with. The truck starts fine and runs great for a couple of blocks, but as it warms up and I come to a stop the Ranger will jerk then die. It will start right up and usually only do it once or twice then it's warm enough that it runs fine there after. The jerking reminds me like forgetting to put in the clutch on a manual transmission. It jerks a little then dies. But this is an automatic. Any thoughts???

Re: Jerks and dies when warming up
try checking your fluid? if it is low i would suggest instead of topping it off, replace the filter and flush it with some high quality stuff like royal purple. that is what i did and my tranny runs better then stock.

Change your fuel filter every 50,000 miles.

Re: Jerks and dies when warming up
I'm suspecting transmission problem. It acts like the transmission won't downshift and it just jerks forward and dies. When I put it in Park, it starts right up and is fine until the next stop. This only happens as it warms up. It is fine when its cold and it's fine after about 10 minutes of driving. Besides that the trucks shifts fine.

Re: Jerks and dies when warming up
I still think it is your fuel system. Have the system pressure tested and change your fuel filter. Try spraying your throttle body out with a can of throttle body cleaner while it is running. Keep it running by controlling the throttle plate with the linkage, manually. That really made my 3.0 run a lot smoother. You might have a lot of sediment in the tank too.

Re: Jerks and dies when warming up
OK, today I took the truck out and drove it about ½ mile. Before I came to a stop I felt it start to jerk so I put it in NEUTRAL and it idle smoothly. I dropped it back into DRIVE and it died right away. I put it back in NEUTRAL and it started right up. I dropped it back into DRIVE and it died right away again. I put it in NEUTRAL then put it in REVERSE and then back into DRIVE and it was fine. Could it be the torque converter not unlocking? In 3 - 4 minutes later, all is fine when I stop.

Re: Jerks and dies when warming up
What does that mean to repair? Complete rebuild?

Re: Jerks and dies when warming up
Took the truck into the shop yesterday. He suggested new solenoids. Later he called and saw the transmission wasn't worth replacing all the solenoids ($1200). They suggest a fluid change, lube additives and see what happens. I just picked it up and it's running fine, but I need to wait a few days and drive it cold and see what happens. Next move is to get a rebuilt or rebuild this one ($2800).

Re: Jerks and dies when warming up
I'm still having the same problem. The transmission needs fixed. My question is should I get a rebuilt transmission, rebuild this transmission or get a good used one from a reliable salvage yard? What can I expect to pay to swap out an automatic transmission?
