idle surge, running rough, guzzling gas
2002 Ranger Edge 3.0
Started engine and noticed the idle was high, then when i put it in gear it dropped low and started idling rough.Once i pressed the gas to go the engine ran up to around 2000 rpm and stayed there with no pedal from me. CEL has been on for 2 yrs.Had the codes checked and it came up showing o2 sensor but didnt break it down to which one.Changed fuel filter
cleaned MAF
Cleaned IAC
still runs rough and speeds up by itself.
I have had it in the shop before for the CEL but they couldnt diagnois
need help...
thanks

Re: idle surge, running rough, guzzling gas
Looks like this is what I'll be checking today. Mine started doing the exact same thing last night out of the blue.

Need a little more help than I thought I did I guess because I am not sure where this elbow is? Can you help me with a description?

Re: idle surge, running rough, guzzling gas
its located on the driver side at the back of engine you can see where the pcv goes into the engine near the firewall
----------
the part was 17.99 at autozone...
details of my problem were
surging idle
rough idle
spark knocking
stuck throttle
shutdown while idling
no power
gas guzzling
hope this helps you

Re: idle surge, running rough, guzzling gas
Ok so I checked the elbow and saw no cracks or anything and then I looked down under my truck because the exhaust wasn't sounding right and it looks like exhaust was leaking pretty high up in the system. Close to the engine and o2 sensors. You think that could cause my high idle?

Re: idle surge, running rough, guzzling gas
Well anytime you have a leak as in vacuum or exhaust,so many unexplained things can happen as in my situation...You must correct your exhaust leak for sure. That would be a good start to solving your problem...I have had a manifold leak which made my idle surge before on my Jeep Wrangler.Im sure with the leak the o2 sensors are not reading correctly....have you had the codes scanned?

Re: idle surge, running rough, guzzling gas
I went and got it scanned today and I had used to just have the rear o2 sensor bad because, well it's not there. When the genius p/o put in the new exhaust they left out the back o2 sensor. But today when I got them ran the guy told me I had two for my o2 sensor and one for my idle air control valve, he didn't give me the numbers. I figure it was just his way to try and get me to buy a new iac valve. I am going to try and clean it tomorrow and see if it changes anything. I plan on running the truck without the valve on to see if there is a change in the idle at all. At this point I would really love for it to be just the iac valve needing a cleaning or replacement because I can not find any vacuum leaks and looking for them sucks! I have some exhaust and o2 questions but I will take those on over to the exhaust board. Thanks for your help man.
For the record right now my symptoms are a high idle about 2k with the ac on and 2,500-3k with it off or after the truck has been running a while. Every once in a while it will dip or go higher while idling. In lower gears I can take my foot off the gas and still speed up it will take me up to about 30-35 mph if I put it in 3rd early and just let it run. And then when I shut the truck off it gives a nice little shake thanks to the high idle.

Re: idle surge, running rough, guzzling gas
Problem solved!!! Pulled my IAC off today and looked inside to clean it and there was a wood splinter wedged inside the valve keeping it open. No clue how it got there just glad its gone and my truck idles great again!
