Default oil consumption

I have a 91 Ranger 2wd 5 speed with a 3.0 v6 and 59K miles on it. I was running 5w30 and now switched back to 10w40 oil. In both cases I seem to be a quart low between 4000 mile oil changes. It doesn't leak or smoke that I can tell, so where is the oil going? Thanks for any advice.

Mine is almost identical, a '91 3.0 with automatic with original 76k, and the oil consumption is the same, about a quart in 4k. I don't consider that oil consumption, except when compared to the much newer vehicles.

I have seen an occasional damp spot under the engine but never an oil drip. It's probably jusy 18 yr old technology.

Eagle23 You are probably right, Thank you for responding to my question, It does make me feel better to know you and I have about the same well maintained truck and have the same amount of oil missing. I'm just glad to have this 18 yr. old truck.

I had a Dodge that did that, if you only put 4 qt. in at the oil change, that is what you had at the next oil change.
Put the five quarts and new filter, then check it every week to see how long it takes to get to the add mark. the old Dodge would run it out in 3 weeks of city driving and about 8 hours on the highway.
