Default Auto tranny slipping, "O/D" light blinking?

Two days ago my transmission started slipping in 3rd gear and it has gotten worse ever since. After awhile of driving it the "O/D off" light (the light on the instrument panel that tells you that the overdrive is off when you push the button on the shifter knob) starts to blink and the tranny doesn't really slip anymore when the light is blinking.

I just wanted know if this is fixable or is my tranny just gone and needs to be rebuilt

Thank you,

Jesse D.

go to a tranny shop and get the code read...the o/d light flashing means theres a DTC stored

So what was the issue with your truck that you came to find out? Mine is doing the exact same thing right now. I haven't had a chance to get the codes scanned, but just wondering what your problem ended up being... Just hope I don't have to rebuild or buy a new tranny..

My O/D will start flashing if I messed with the O/D the day before and my transmission would lose reverse and act crazy for a couple drives, it helps to stop and turn the engine off for a couple minutes. I havent touched it since and my transmission hasnt done anything crazy since.

Oh wow, I should have looked at the dates... oh well.

My o/d light keeps flashing, and I know it's not my tranny. I do know I need to get it scanned at Ford, or at an auto shop to find out what is exactly wrong. I just wanted to know if you had the same problem. It's been doing this for a week now, and I have to get it fixed soon. The transmission is in "LIMP HOME" mode. I just wish I knew if it was my tranny filter, solenoid, or a new valve body kit. I just haven't had the chance to put it in the shop, and I want to know what needs to be done. Thanks for your help. I'll post once I get it fixed to see what it needs. Thanks.

This post is really old so I doubt they will reply. I'd suggest that you take it to a shop if it has been flashing for a week. The longer you go with that light flashing the more damage on your transmission is potentially done. I'd also suggest if you have pressed the Overdrive button to STOP. I really doubt it will get better if you press that button everyday. Once I hit that OD button on my truck I EXPECT it to start flashing. So if you get it back to normal without truly fixing the problem, don't press that button again.

It has nothing to do with the O/D button. In Rangers the "O/D off" light blinks for the transmission, as does the "Check Engine" light blinks for the engine. The button has nothing to do with it. It's a transmission system error that tells the light to blink. What I was trying to find out was another possibility of what the issue could be.

Angie, you're screwed. Something IS wrong with your transmission if the O/D Off light is flashing. Even if you think your transmission is running normal, chances are it's a slight difference that you can't feel, but your transmission sure as heck can. Unfortunately there is no way to tell what the issue could be until you get the code checked. Once you get the code checked, post it up back here so we can go from there.

My check engine light doesn't blink, it stays on and i have to manually reset it. My O/D didn't stay on, it flashed when there was a problem and it stopped on its own. All I was trying to get across was the fact that I have had this happen with my truck two seperate times, BOTH times I had used the O/D button for towing something. BOTH times the O/D started flashing after I was done and put it back to normal. So if you've been pressing that button trying to get it to stop flashing like I did and if you truck is anything like mine it wont help. I just cut the engine off and it eventually stopped. My personal experience is that when that button is pressed and engages whatever it does in the tranny it triggers the screw up. I have not messed with the O/D over a year now, transmission is still good. Yes I should get it looked at, but its fine now. I will if it acts up again.

If you manually shut overdrive off with the button, and then your O/D Off light starts flashing, something may be wrong with your Torque Converter's lockup function.

The most common issue that will present itself in automatic transmission is when the O/D light starts flashing. The “O/D OFF” light flashing is equivalent to a “Check Engine Light” only for the transmission. This usually means that something incorrect has occurred in the transmission a few times and the ECU has basically red-flagged the situation.*Commonly when the “O/D OFF” light starts*flashing, it will also place the vehicle into “Limp*Home*Mode” where it locks the transmission into whatever gear it’s currently in to prevent any further damage to vital parts. This usually comes along with the sense of “a loss of power”, which is quite true. If you come to a stop locked in “Drive” you don’t have the torque multiplication you would have in “First”, hence the feeling of “no power” when taking off again. This is normal. Now the “O/D OFF”*flashing*usually means the ECU has stored a code that should be read as soon as possible. More then often, people will get to wear they are going, or back*home, and turn their vehicle off. When they turn it back on the “O/D OFF” light is no longer*flashing*and this is also normal, but NOT a sign that things are ok. When you turn the vehicle off, even for 2 seconds, it wipes the flash memory and the ECU will not trip the code and “O/D OFF” light again until the problem has occurred again a few times.

*located driver side of trans next to the cable that moves for the shift lever on the side of the trans there's your best bed go under clean with a air gun from a air compressor and use brake clean to clean connections then use grease for the wire side then put the plug in also reset the battery and u should be good.

Im having the same trouble so Im trying all this tomorrow. I use my ranger for hauling metal and towing, highway driving and real intense mudding.
