It is not lack of technology or the pushrod design.. The 3.0 is too small a displacement for a 6 cylinder with too much rotating mass, and lacks the power to move a very non-aerodynamic, heavy vehicle.

I think they all have something to do with it. No doubt about it an SOHC design could probably have increased the 3.0's efficiency.

I'd have to agree that there are several factors that decrease fuel efficiency in these and you can't forget maintenance(or lack of) and driving style either.

While its not the best I get no less then 18 city with 31s and 3.73s. I don't expect much better then this out of a relatively heavy truck. If I go easy on the gas I can gain a couple of mpgs for free too.

My 3.0 fights the wind on open highway. It sucks so much when that happens.lol. Part of it may be my 50,000 mile original spark plugs and wires. I'm hoping that it'll get better when I replace them.

Not surprising...the wind is powerful and we're driving bricks on wheels.

Have any of you guys ever ran flex fuel? I ran it one time and my truck had alittle more get up,but it always costs more and u get worse gas mileage so I don't see the point! Oh and only one gas station in town carries it!

Sucks for you...the price of E85 is usually right at the break even point around here (~30% less). You get slightly more power and the engine runs a lot cleaner. I like to compare it to running your engine on nothing but fuel injector cleaner.

The all-iron aspect might have something to do with it too, iron is heavier than aluminum. In Tauruses they're faster, but not by much , and more fuel efficient, again, not by much. it's the highway mileage that really takes a dive (6mpg less) when a 3.0 is in a Ranger, city is less than a Taurus too, but only by 2 mpg. I used to have a 1993 Caddillac Deville, it got crap city mileage but highway was surprisingly good.
