Default blew spark plug out of motor

hey yall i have a 1999 ranger with the 3.0 4x4. the motor was running for the most part ok until i started pullin a uhaul trailer and thats when i started with the problems. it ran kinda sluggish going up hills and what not. well fri night i replaced the plugs and it ran like shit so i took them back and got some diff ones and it ran and ideal was better. i started back off to indy and it seem to pull better so on my sec trip i was pullin a 1993 mustang 2.3 on a tow dollie. i got half way and when u turn the truck off and then crank it back up u would have to keep your foot on the gas to get it to fire up. well as i was pullin out of a gas station i got about 3 miles and i heard a loud bang from the motor and then a tappin noise. as i was looking i found that the #1 cylinder has blown the spark plug out. the plug wire was burnt up and the plug was still in wire. when we got it back i got the bad plug out and put new one in along with new wire. it started up and seem to run ok but about a mile down the road it started tappin. the tappin gets worse as u get on the gas. well i pulled over at gas station and shut truck off. now the truck wont start at all it will turn over but not fire up it acts like it does but wont. does any one have a insight as the what the problem is. the truck is in indy right now and im back iin evansvile so i can look at it more next week. any and all thoughts would help.

Let me guess. They were not Autolite or Morotcraft brand plugs, were they?

the ones i put in where motorcraft platnum. when i pulled the back out the #1 cyl had a black all over the plug. i put autolite copper back in but like i said the #1 cyl is the one that blew so that tells me there is a problem with that cyl.

Was the bottom of the spark plug that got blown out smashed in?

Wow. It's common for our motors to violently reject or just give up on other brands so I figured that's what you did. It could have been a bad plug such as defective threads or improperly installed. Or the wrong plugs. But it sounds like there are other underlying issues due to the other problems leading up to this.

the only thing in the block was the casing to the plug and the tip the plug was blown in half so it may have been a badd plug but its weird that it was the same cyl that i had problem with on the fist set.

the 5.4 triton has a bad problem with that 98% of the time the head has to be pulled and have a thread sleeve put in it and then put back in.... never heard of a 3.0 doing this.....

Does it only turn over, or will it actually kick a little and then not start?

Yeah, I have never heard of this either. I was thinking a bad ignition coil maybe, but I don't know man.
