Default Gear shift needle is off - plastic piece broken under dash

Hey everyone, so yesterday while attempting to put my truck into drive my needle moved over an entire gear, so it looks like I'm in low 2 when I'm actually in Drive. I looked under the hood per the suggestions in this thread with no success (the roller isn't moving the needle).

Parking needle wont move?

There's what looks like a broken piece of white plastic right above the roller hanging on to the very thin wire that connects to the top metal piece that is just sitting right above the roller itself on the thinner cable. I can't find any photos of what it's supposed to look like, but I'm guessing a free piece of white plastic isn't supposed to be there, and probably is supposed to be somewhere else instead. Does anyone know what this piece of plastic goes to and where to get a replacement?

This is the closest photographic example I could find, but I don't know how different the assembly is in an F150 than in a Ranger.

Mine looks like that, except with an extra piece of plastic just sitting through the thinner wire on top.

You can pull the setup from a gauge cluster in the junk yard. The needle prob broke off the cable inside the cluster

Looks like the little plastic piece that the wheel is on is broken, looks like the one in this thread:

The needle works, it's just off by a gear. So it looks like I'm in 2 when I'm in Drive.

Well you can also adjust it by rolling the wheel

Since the housing for the wheel (the white part) is broken, when moving the wheel it doesn't change the position of the needle, unfortunately.

Does anyone know the name of that part though?

When tensing the top thin wire piece the needle goes back where it should, but when I let go it just goes back to being off again. Any ideas on how to keep it tense without paying the $150 that the auto repair places want for a new piece of plastic?

You should be able to swap the PRND box with a new wire and all. I can pull one from the yard for you this week if you'd like

How hard is it to replace the assembly though? I am afraid to lose the wire in the tube.

So get this.

Today I was fiddling around with it more with a friend's help looking at the needle, and I must have moved some wires around or something, because the temperature and direction indicator above the windshield that has NEVER worked since I've had the truck...started working. Not to mention the fact that my truck gears perfectly when it's warmed up (won't get into when it's cold) and idles quietly instead of rough. What the hell did I do?

Its a breeze, the box can be swapped out with the wire attached, loop and adjustment box

I had the same problem but I figured out why it was doing it. There is a spring under the dash that keeps the wire tight. It hooks on a little piece of metal under the dash.

Could you be more specific? I don't recall seeing a spring in there.

There isnt a spring, just the cable going from the speedometer, with the adjuster box attached, then the loop on the end which attaches to the silver J hook under the dash which is your column shifter

Mine has a spring that connects to the J Hook.
